I live in a village between York and Harrogate on the railway so getting to them and Leeds piece of cake, an hour or so from Pools and a night out if I wanted. Believe me I have worked all over the country and there are far worse places than Hartlepool.

Likewise Rinkender there are much worse places than Hartlepool and to be fair there are also much nicer places not too far away.

Sorry, but I pretty much agree with Grave.

I'm born n bred in the town and have been fortunate.

But I've set up a business in the town - and closed it as the staff seemed to think that total theft was ok.

Recently, opened a business in South Tyneside and everyone that I employed from Hartlepool has caused problems and left.

Hartlepool or a sign of the times? Dunno, but I've had enough of loyalty to my home town.

Sorry

I doubt you would get a consensus of opinion on here about pubs. I dont drink so dont tend to frequent them, as a consequence I can say hand on heart I have never been in The White House for instance.

From comments I have seen on here some people seem to think it as close as you can get to heaven in Hartlepool, while others consider it pretty close to hell.

A narrow consensus of England really then, more about how the working class has broken up into different factions over the last 30 years than actual fact. Different views primarily brought about by individuals circumstances. Feel free to shoot me down sadx

top house is still open I think, however in the last 10 years wingate/station town has lost 5 pubs, 2 of which have been flattened.

Weirdly, I am exhibiting at a trade show down in that London, and the family on the stand opposite me moved to Hartlepool from Reading about ten years ago. They bought what was a hotel on the headland, converted it and live in that. They can't say enough nice things about the place, apart from that everyone calls them 'cockernees'.

One of things I really like about Pools is the variety you get in such a small area from International Nature reserves & decent beaches to the history of the Headland, British West Hartlepool & some great people & some good nights out. Having lived in several places in England from the South-East to the Nth-East concurring with some posters that Pools is better than a lot of places. Chip mentions Bracknell. He's right. Awful commuter new town with a few gigs back in the day in the Leisure Centre & not much else. The Office- Slough- Gervais was spot on with his portrayal. Reading was the same until the last few years although you could get into London easily enough but fook all on most of the time considering it's a Uni town. All this in the supposedly wealthy Home Counties . Some decent people but no better than Pools or the Nth-East generally. One of the things that attracted me to watching Pools when I moved up here in the late eighties was the humour & friendliness of the Vic stalwarts. There's not nice people, chavs & good people in most places. Pools is struggling like many towns but's it's cheap, with semi-decent transport links & some great countryside in & around the town. Lot going on grassroots sports wise too when compared to some places. Like a lot of places, the economics of the town make it difficult for some to stay or thrive but the grass, gentleman, ain't a lot greener elsewhere & more to the point, there's no Vic.

The funniest thing he said was that Headlanders were complaining about 'foreigners' buying property in the area. He took it personally thinking they were having a pop at him, but they were actually referring to the good folk of British West Hartlepool!

I've always been one to defend Hartlepool to the naysayers, most of whom who have never lived anywhere else, so wouldn't know just how bad a year in Carlisle can be for example. A week feels like a month there.

On the other hand, I moved to Arusha, Tanzania 6 months ago. The place is witnessing massive development and it feels vibrant. It isn't perfect - the corruption is breath-taking, the roads are largely shit and getting a good full English is nigh on impossible. Still, hotels, restaurants and bars are springing up everywhere. You can see a town that's growing. When I came home to Hartlepool for Christmas, you can't help but feel that the town is stagnating. My mate came home from 2 years in Australia and was shocked at how little things had changed. It's the same old, same old. I just don't see myself ever living here again, I'm sad to say.

Lovely place to reminisce about, revisit, and declare your pride as a Poolie, but sadly, and historically, almost impossible to make a decent living in. Some people would be surprised at how well known Hartlepool is worldwide.
