What are the best things about living in Hartlepool (or not far from it for the not quite Monkey Hangers among us)?

There are very little ethnic or inter-racial tensions.

People not constantly asking me what certain slang terms I say mean.
Never telling people "the monkey story" about 2-3 times a week.
Finding a pub with the footy on.
Having loads of activities on your door step without travelling ages and ones that dont involve horse riding or punting.
Not being around people called Hugo, Mungo, Will and all the other toff names of people that have "rugger" jack wills tops on who hang about in all bar one.

Countryside, Hills, Beaches all within a short walk/drive.
Less than half a day travelling gets me to pretty much anywhere else in the country I'd need to be.
Property prices that mean I can live in a decent house without a massive mortgage.
Crime isn't that bad compared to the overcrowded bits of the country.
People are generally friendly.

ah but white scum is better than ethnic minorities. It tells you all you need to know that when asked this question, the best people can come up with is the fish and chips.

Which is a myth anyway.

Its too bloody cold, usually, to enjoy the beach, and when its red hot, the beach, and seaton, are full of dodgepots.

And on a red hot the day the queues at the chip shops are just funny.

Of course there are places worse than Hartlepool.

But there are many many better ones.

And dont any of you fuckwits that have left try and patronise me by saying its better than I think. You not nice people havent rushed to come back.

I did go back to live, several times, after I first left but I wouldn't live there now. The town's changed beyond recognition. It's just depressing to see the deterioration.

Like everything else the truth is somewhere in the middle.. it's not shit and it's not Elysium .... The shopping Centre is a joke .. Not that I bother going there anyway...

The council are a joke intent on using money pilfered by selling of any green space for building to fund their own pet projects..(fook knows what they are unless it's the executive pink rolls Royce for The Lord and Gaylord Mayor)

Finally I'm wondering if the place is so utter shit why are bothering building more and more Fookin houses?

Sorry for being so disjointed but this is my first rant this year...

There does seem to be an ever-increasing market for expensive-looking new houses in the Park end of the town. I often wonder who has the money to buy them, when unemployment in the town is so high? Bit of a mystery.

Then there are the run-down, boarded-up hovels like those in the streets behind the Odeon, where hoi polloi have to live out their days. No sign of any of them being re-built.

Dalton, Elwick and Greatham are far enough away, but close enough, if you get my meaning :?

if you want a villag-ey type place, there's loads of nice small villages around Sedgefield area, also around Trimdon area. Kelloe maybe.

Sedgie itself ain't a bad shout

Durham's a nice place but is a traffic nightmare if you plan to drive at any point. I live at Dalton-Le-Dale near Seaham and it's really nice, next to the A19 and close enough to Newcastle and Durham for going out etc.

Cheers was just thinking Durham as the missus is moving her degree there hopefully. I recon I will probably just end up living in the town and then her traveling by car.

What's wrong with Bishop Cuthbert village or Seaton Carew near Hartlepool?

If I was going somewhere village like I'd look at the places between Stockton and Sedgefield or maybe Stokesley/Great Ayton way. An ex colleague rented a cracking house in Swainby with 4 bedrooms and loads of nice bits for £600 a month which was stupid cheap.

Depends what your criteria are, really. Durham is very attractive, but it's also a bit dull. Very little goes on here and I find I've to go to Newcastle most of the time for 'social' things (which is a bit of a drag after a while, especially as last train home is well before 11pm).

One thing I like about it is that you need to drive for only about 5 mins to be in quite wild countryside, but that mightn't appeal to you.

Schools are quite good and it's easy to find a house within walking distance of one of or other of them. Anything I've missed?

I was trying to think of some good stuff but didnt get very far. The beaches as Ripper mentioned are cracking, although since they flattened the Steetely its open season for flytipping.

I walk the dog down there most days and its turning into a fucking shithole, there was a fridge, a sofa and a laod of bagged up building waste been flytipped by scumbags onto the beach itself the last couple of days, and the Steetley land is just a racetrack for not nice people on motorbikes and in 4 by 4's .

Dont think I've ever seen anywhere like Hartlepool for general littering, you just see people finish a bag of crisps or their Greggs and chuck the empty bags on the floor, likewise if they are drinking from a can or a bottle they will shot the empty over a wall into someones garden.

I was down south before Christmas and went for a look around a place where I used to live, and the first thing that struck me was how little litter there was, and how people were using litter bins.

The you come back into town on the train and from Seaton Carew till it gets in the station the place just looks like a fucking tip. Cant understand why all these not nice people on probation/community service/long term workshy arent out cleaning the fucking gaff up ?

My thoughts exactly, been in Bristol twice this year whilst following pools and its like another world, feels almost European. Living in Hartlepool or East Durham its easy to think this country has gone to the dogs, but there are things that have happened down south over last 20 years that make you realise in a lot of respects things have improved, very little litter, kids that don't swear every other word and put there dirty feet up on bus seats etc.

I think not cleaning dog shit up off the pavement when your dog takes a crap...is a human right in Hartlepool

It must be, cos I can't explain how else so much shite can be on the floor between my house and the shop

The good things about the town are:

Fish and chips
Corned beef squares
Stotties
The beach
Pools
Some good pubs
The people - mostly friendly, unpretentious, charitable, and warm.

The bad things all seem to stem from high unemployment - some folk not giving a fuck due to lack of aspirations, hence the anti-social behaviour and general deterioration.

That's the problem as I see it.

So many people who've had the crap kicked out of them (metaphorically speaking) over and over by life and just have ran out of fucks to give.

Don't get me started on littering and fucking fly tipping filthy scummy pikey not nice people either because even when you film the scruffy bastards and send the videos to environmental health and plod they do fuck all. Even when some scruffy vest wearing gypo gets out of his transit and threatens to kill you its too much hassle for the Police.

Very good restaurants
Friendly people
Great Football Team
Decent shops
Decent pubs
Good (mostly) clean beaches
Everything tends to be fairly cheap
Pies from Nowells
Not all the good stuff is the centre, Seaton Carew, The Headland, Marina and the Museum, and the surrounding villages are all worth a visit
Nice view out to sea
Nearby to Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, and Teesdale

Granted I have never lived in Hartlepool, but I visit a lot because of football and visiting family there. Not once have I ever been bored in Hartlepool. That's what makes it great for me.

You see, I don't get people who come out with this crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm Hartlepool born and bred and I will always defend the town the best I can when someone from out of town slags it off. The people in Hartlepool are typically either:

*On drugs
* Ignorant as fuck (the people in the town don't seem to have a clue how to say thanks when you hold a door open for them). They drive the same way too. No fucker in the town let's you out at junctions. It happens in other places , you just need to venture ten miles in either direction and you see the difference!
* zombie like. The town center is like a scene from the walking dead. People with no spirit just trudging along looking almost dead behind their eyes.
* parents telling their young kids to fuck off because they complain about their pastie being cold.
* chavs.

Obviously there will be exceptions but you would severely struggle to find anywhere in the country with less attractive people. Hartlepool has turned into one of the worst places in the country and it isn't an over reaction, it's the view of anyone who has lived outside of the town and isn't blinded by a misguided loyalty to the town.

The town has good house prices but for obvious reasons- there is fuck all to do in the town. The headland is quite nice- the beach is largely unspoilt . For anyone who has ever had friends from out of town staying over, chances are you will have had to take people to see the headland and a meal at the marina. Apart from that it's a right struggle!

Ah yes, that old chestnut about southerners not being as nice. It's complete tripe.

Not as much tripe as someone of the sweeping generalisations you've come out with in this thread that could be applied to just about any decent sized town in the UK.

You get good and bad everywhere.

Anyone who thinks where they live is perfect and look down their noses at places like and people from places like Hartlepool are pretentious, probably deluded twats who I don't want to be around.

Can we start a Darlo style totaliser and organise charity fundraisers to help Grave get the money to fuck off and move to were ever his mythical utopia is?
