Possibly my favourite Pools player certainly during the IOR years.

Great read but don't call him a legend, he is so much better than the money guzzling Premier League arseholes who get called that. Joel is a great bloke who looks like an even better footballer with hindsight (and he looked pretty good at the time). He deserves a better accolade, something like Joel Porter - Poolie for life.

I reckon Joe Allon was a better out and out striker although his all round game wasn't even close to being as good as Porter's.

Like all famed Pools strikers down the years, a regular in 42nd Street on a Saturday night as well!

Seriously though, a great player, with a fantastic work ethic and an eye for goal. A wonderful signing.

There was a short period of time when we had Porter, Boyd, James Brown, and Eiffion all in the same match day squad.

We can only dream of that now.

That's a bit mean, Dibble. You're comparing players at their peak with players who are, in many cases, still developing.

Dibble has lost his moral compass. He is now favouring modern, all seater stadiums and abusing the youngsters. By that I mean not comparing them fairly to former greats, not anything dodgy.

I wasnt comparing them.

But is there a player at Pools now that plays like Joel porter?

Or anyone with the skill of Brown or Boyd?

They are different. They may be young and have great futures but i dont see a player in the style of those three.

Sorry to be so factual.

Infact Pools only player that really compares is Poole, and he keeps getting dropped, or taken off for Sweeney.

Gerraway, you've GOT to be joking?

Llewellyn and Proctor struck much more fear into opposition defences!

No, no-one now who plays like Joel....but the point is Joel didn't play like Joel when he set out, either. Surely you remember how he played when he first came.

I agree about Brown and I agree about Poole, not so much so about Adam Boyd. He was a player with flashes of genius, when he was great. But there were an awful lot of in-between times when he seemed unable to do even the simple things.

Porter just took time to adapt.

Porters biggest problem was making Danny Wilson know what a good player is. I think this was during Wilsons obsession with the long diagonal ball.

Porter wasn't really prolific as a striker, I reckon James and Franks probably have more goals in them, but his all round game was fantastic and all Pools fans love a player who gives 100% and that was what he gave especially in his last season.

fans love players like Porter.. always looking for an opening, always showing for the ball, always thinking, always keeping defenders on a knife edge, and always good enough to execute his intended pass or shot on goal when he receives the ball, always good enough to hold off a an opponent from dispossessing him... a complete football player plying his trade at least one division too low during his time at Pools... but who cares when we got to have him playing for us all them years

Fantastic footballer

Cant see it, we signed him as we had the patience to wait on a work permit, other clubs didnt, there loss, he was championship standard n towards the end, his last season especially, he was totally unplayable.

Glad in a way he left us on a high, like before he got old or poor, keeps the memories positive.

Porter was brilliant. He had some magic about him, probably his dedication. Never expected anything and always have his best. Also seemed genuinely pleased for himself and the fans when he scored. Great player.

Boyd was also brilliant, when he wanted to be. He was far more exciting on the ball than others.

Eiffion was a gem too. Lost a bit when he was put on the wing but another reliable player.

I still look back fondly at Hugh Robertson. A strange full back but he couldn't half whack a free kick in!
