So what exactly did the breakwater stop? This is a serious question if there's an oceanographer in the house who can tell me. I know it breaks waves but it can't break tides. And it can't break waves on Marine drive or in Seaton.

I believe that it was built to reduce the energy in the waves heading towards the docks, not only to reduce the waves going into the dock area itself but also to give a smoother run through the deep water channel in the entrance / exit to the docks to reduce the risk of ships going out of the channel and grounding. *



* That might be all bollox of course cos I can't remember why I think that, where I might have read it or who might have told me in the deep and distant past.

The swimming pool was built there because of the shelter that the location got from the breakwater.
