They call it 'sweat shop' labour now, whereby small boys were given tasks like shovelling a ton of coal into the coalhouse and given a shilling to do it even though it took six days. Then you gave the money to an adult who took it to the pub and spent it. So there was more than a little Dickensian feel to it. But at least we never had ricketts........
