Theres a very interesting exchange going on at present between mutton-chopped 1969 throwback Darlington 1883 fan and Northern Echo journalist Craig Stoddart, and BBC Tees James Mountford regarding BBC Tees using Darlington 1883's correct and official name on air.

I didn't realise the "1883" bit angered Darlington 1883 fans QUITE as much.

Does it really make any difference that they are now known as Darlington 1883?

I mean, it's only "1883" added on to their name.

I think it's rather distinctive to be honest. Seems to have rattled a few including Loan Star who no doubt will surface on here to explain why Darlington 1883 fans (all 868 of them) dislike their full and correct name so much.

BTW, I rate James Mountford highly, best Sports chappie on that station.

I can understand why the loids would hate being referred to as Darlington 1883, or any name other than plain Darlington.
Simply because it is a constant reminder of what has happened to the club they love.
I hope it never happens to us.

Having said that I'll revert back to type and say bollocks to them.

I find it funny that the deluded loons thought the "steamroller" would march on in the current pub league they are in when in fact the mighty Warrington, Curzon Ashton, Bamber Bridge, Farsley and Lancaster all above them and Ramsbotton and Northwich Victoria breathing down their necks with games in hand. Attendance was under 900 for their last game and didnt their manager say they where struggling financially on gates over 1000. Oh dear sounds like the new bean counters and bucket rattlers are using the same calculators and budget reports that the two Georges had.

They also have fans verbally abusing their own players. These players who are part time, and probably earn less than the muppets abusing them.

Nowt so queer as 1883 fans.

Maybe the Loid fan doesn't like his club being referred to as Darlington 1883 as they should really be called Bishop Auckland 2012.

They should have been called:

Darlington DL14 9AE

Which is the post code of the Sainsburys where they now play. Yes, I googled it.

Yes, a mate of mine wanted to go to their game at the weekend, but didn't know where the ground was. Somebody in Bishop Town Centre said "just follow the crowd" and he ended up in Home Bargains!

It's the overly optimistic average crowd that they aspire to attract.

And which they've probably based their budget on.

The rumour I hear is that they're dropping the 1883 bit next season and will instead be known as Darlington 650.

Does 1883 stand for the amount of creditors and local businesses they absolutely screwed over the 3 times they went into administration?

one or two of them are realistic offering realistic scenarios. Some of the others though, need to take off their Darlo painted glasses to actually see the reality of the situation they are in, as they seem unable to accept it

Until they do, then they will continue to be in a state of denial and never progress

Bonjour from Paris! Fully concur that James Mountford is a top gadgie and that Sussex ran out of comebacks some time in the early 90s.

If I had to refer to them I would say the numbers individually ie Darlington One Eight Eight Three, rather than Eighteen Eighty Three.

Maybe 1-8-8-3 refers to their formation. You know when you have 20 a-side games on the Rec? One in goal, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders and three goal moochers?

That place where Darlo are palnning to go is a rugby club, with about 5 pitches. One of which is a football pitch.

Its decidedly non league. And the pitches arent great either.

Anyone ever been involved with laying a new pitch will know just how expensive it is.

There was a junior football team played there....Darlington TSC.

Its just not a football place. Should suit Darlo Space 1999 well.

They are a fan owned club so I'm guessing fans chose the name, it seems a bit strange to hate it so much I could understand if it was 'Darlington 2012' but surely the year is a reminder that it's a continuation of the old club and not a new one?

For a fan-owned club they seem to be making a series of hilarious fuck-ups in climbing up the rungs of the Evo-Stick leagues. You really couldn't write this stuff

I've heard rumours that they're planning a single release to raise funds to pay off old debts that aren't their fault so they can run up some new ones . I'd suggest a cover of this classic:

Uncle Ken will always be true to himself. George Reynolds was true to himself. As was George Houghton, and Radged Singh.

The fact that the latter three were delusional cranks was the issue.

I think the idea was for an extensive poll to determine the new name but, from what I understand, no decision could be made by the time the deadline rolled around and so one had to be picked from haste. I could be wrong like.

The Poll was actually "won" by the name Locomotive Darlington. The Doils reckoned that it was sabotaged by Pools fans so settled for Darlington 1883, the second-placed name choice (with a mighty 16 votes if I recall)

All very apt for that train-crash of a club.

Fucking daft when you think about it.

They are a new club and the rules state that new club = new name and all the dummy spitting isn't going to change the fact that in the eyes of the FA Darlington FC have ceased to exist, adding 1883 makes as much sense as renaming us Hartlepool United 1908 would if the same misfortune (yes I'm being generous) hit our club, you keep your identity and make the extra bit of name something that has a historical relevance.

While their fans are whining about a name, being deluded about their level and refusing to go and watch their 'home' games the club will slowly stagnate, I can really see them being down to 600 fans if they don't get promoted this season and then even if they move back to Darlington getting back to 4 figures and climbing up the leagues will be a nightmare because that town is probably slightly less interested in their club that most of Hartlepool is in ours.

Don't lose your backers PJ after they've banked the few quid you'll make for James on January 1st.

Uncle Ken doesn't think clubs that owe money should exist.
