Few of us just booked for a few nights in November, only £70 for a return flight... Anyone been?

We are going mainly for the cheap beer and a visit to Auschwitz

Went 5/6 years ago it's decent. Plenty of bars and good looking lasses. Nice sort of old towny feel a bit like Prague but not quite as good. You have to see Austwitz obviously, but if you have time go to the Salt Mine as well. I had no expectation, if fact I was thinking 'what the fuck are we going to a mine for when we could be on the drink' but it's an amazing place.... seriously

Been to Poland a few times and the food in general is shit though, worst country I've ever been for pouching.

I'm going to Budapest in August, anyone been there?

Went about 3 years ago, pretty decent place. Found a sports bar which made it a little better. I only realised when I got there it is actually two towns, buda one side of the river and pest the other.

You should take a bout trip up the river and if you get chance go look at the castle.

A few of us stopped in Budapest when we went to watch England play in Slovakia and it was a spot on place, it was that cheap we got a taxi to Slovakia and had the driver wait all day for us and bring us back :-D :-D

The drink was cheap but the further you got bang in the centre where the stripper bars where it got a bit more pricey but was still cheap. Keep a eye on the taxi's we got in one to take us back to our hotel after a night out and he drove us the opposite way to a nightclub and tried to make us go in and kicked off when we wouldnt, talking to a few people the same thing happened to them it looks like they get a bit money if you go in. Oh and the woman are lovely

Budapest is a nice place, you'll enjoy it.
The Danube runs right through the middle of it. Was originally two cities, Buda and Pest, either side of the river.
In the centre you get approached by gorgeous girls who ask you to buy them a drink. If you agree they ask you to take them to their favourite bar or club, and the rip off begins.
You should worry though, PJ.........they usually avoid the ugly ones !!!!
I got avoided!!!! sadx
PS............Gelert Hill is the place to go for views of the city.

A lovely city, very cosmopolitan. Visit Kazimierz (Jewish quarter) a shadow of it's former self ( I was the only Jew in the place when I visited....former ghetto and totally 'cleared'). Schindler's List was filmed there. There are firms that do day trips to Auschwitz....go to the second camp (Birkenau) as it is less 'commercial' !!
The bars are very friendly and they love Brits with manners.....me and my mate were spoilt by the Poles there (free drinks and t shirts). Enjoy !

Me and 5 mates went there in October 2006, some good bars in the main square, and was pretty cheap then, found a great bar in a cellar called 'Klub U Louisa', ( http://www.ulouisa.com ) had a cracking night in there.
We also found that at the time, rather than go on an 'organised' trip by a tour operator. it was cheaper to do it ourselves. We were able to get a taxi to Auschwitz 1, taxi driver waited for us, took us to Birkenau, waited for us there too, and then at the end of the day took us back to the hotel, for considerably less than it would have been to pay for 6 of us on a bus trip, and we were able to do it at our own pace without having to worry about being back somewhere at a certain time. It may not be a cheaper alternative now, but depending on how many are going check out this option too.

Kazimierz was very picturesque. I was lucky to be in Krakow on a beautiful summer's day, sat outside a café for half of the day people watching. In terms of bars, a more mixed view. Some were absolutely fine but others not so much in terms of their approach to the British. This was in 2007 and at the height of the Polish influx into Britain. Not sure if it was just a coincidence but we did get some hostility. I was called an 'English shite' by a very large Pole, only for the waitress to apologise as 'he is from the country.' It didn't really spoil my view of the place, though I liked Warsaw more.

PJ - Budapest is fantastic. I went the first time and stayed in the wrong part of town (Buda instead of Pest) and the weather was crap. I went back last year when I was travelling Europe and had the absolute rip. The 'ruin pubs' must definitely be frequented. Google them. Szympla Kert is the most popular, but the others are just as good in other ways. You there on a stag do by any chance? I know a group of Hartlepool lads going on my recommendation!

Why would anyone go abroad to sit in a sports bar/Irish bar. Why not try the local bars. I can never work out why some people go to places they can sit at home in. Probably found a bar /cafe that did full English as well. Or is it just me that thinks try the local cafes/bars/ areas.

We always find the English pubs abroad are the dearest places anyway so go to the local bars, prague has some of the best little local bars who are over the moon to welcome you and not try and rip your eyes out but go into old Town square or Wenceslas square and you pay silly money

Spot on did that in Prague and Krakow. Some local brew you can get is ok and as you say a hell lot cheaper. I stayed in Prague 3 and visited local bar most nights on my last night there and having got to know the "owner/barman" he give both me and girl I was with a couple free drinks as a thank you for using his bar,

Prague has got a bit dearer whilst we have been going first time 40kc to pound and paying 14kc a pint now getting 30kc to pound and paying 18kc a pint so our favourite pub in vysherad gets our business every time. Went in the George and dragon once on the corner of the old town square looked at the prices and promptly turned round and left ,going back in march for 4 days for a little relaxation it's a lovely cultural visit of course. Mind if you ever get the chance to go to a concert in the O2 arena prague take it it's a fantastic place.
£160 for flights and 4* hotel you pay more for a shithole in bloody Blackpool

The thing about Budapest is the centre is sprawly, so everywhere tends to be a long walk. And there aren't that many bridges, which makes some walks even longer.

Anyway two of Budapest's best kept secrets are the Obuda quarter, which is off centre and hidden behind a council flat estate, so not something you'd stumble across, and the village of Szentendre (approximate spelling), which is a short suburban train ride. The latter is best in summer like.
Also there's the Gellert baths, which are a national institution.

I've only been to Krakow airport en route to Zakopane this summer. My friend married a Polish girl and the wedding was there. Was a stunning place with some outstanding scenery.

The prices are probably the same in Krakow as they were in Zakopane. Walking down the highstreet you could get a decent pint of lager for around 70p from most bars!

Looking at exchange rates.. It's 5 zloty to the £1.. and apparantly a pint ranges from 4 zloty to 10 zloty depending where you go.

Had two good holidays inPoland, one In Krakow/Opole and one in Opole/Zakopane. Auschwitz is spooky, I never believed in ghosts until I went there.

Got back about 3 hours ago.. Fantastic place, Auschwitz is one hell of an experience. Beer is cheap, about 20 kebab shops per street and the women are insanely good looking...Decent 4 nights away.

Aye went there yesterday.. Another fantastic place, I was expecting dingy tunnels etc.. But was blown away at the size of some of the chambers.. Especially that massive chapel.
