I know its not till a week Saturday, but I've come on here to answer any questions you'd like regarding pubs, parking, prices and the best place to sit etc.
we've both been doing well recently, so with a favourable result at Fleetwood Saturday, I expect a home crowd of around the 4000 mark, plus whatever you bring down to south wales? Generally county fans are a friendly lot but have got a fair few idiots like most clubs, but they are only out for pompey Bristol oxford etc, so you wont have any problems and should have a good day out.
Fire away with any questions lads, and i'll answer them as honestly as I can!! How many do you think will travel the long journey down? For those of you who do enjoy your day out in Newport.

No one my age speaks welsh in south-east wales, although its compulsory in schools now. as for oldport, shitport would describe it better. Its a bit of a dump mate with half the shops boarded up in the city centre, but plenty of decent pubs in the centre and around the ground.

Have you seen what passes for English now?

You can pass a GCSE without a grasp of spelling and grammar.

Do you have room in your squad, for a very experienced well travelled striker who is far too good for us?

I have little respect for English as a subject anyway. Making kids, these days, study Shakespeare is pathetic, and pointless. Its kept alive by the thespian fraternity only.

Oh, and poetry? What the hell is that all about?

My lad was footy training till 8pmand came home to say he had to write a poem for his homework the following day.

How the hell does that prepare him for the future?

I made a poem up for him.

Four of us travelling down by train on the Friday morning and stopping over till the Saturday.

We are looking to sit and I gather its better than the open terrace behind the ground - can be wet in South Wales! Is that right.

Also any idea of where its best to have a drink before the game - and what "nightlife" will be like after it? If its like Hartlepool it'll be pretty dead.

Cheers

I wouldnt recommend the open terrace behind the ground. Never been, but I guarantee you wont see the match from there.

I will be there with some friends who are neutrals.

As you have no away terrace roof - Is it going to rain, do you have a roof on your bogs and is there a ladies in the away end?

These questions spring from a wet away game at York where the fascilities aspire to being shit.

Any chance of the young reserve keeper who started your season geting a game as we have mutual friends and I am angling to be payed in.

Alright Geoff, you're definitely right about the rain in south wales, so if I was you, i'd definitely pay the extra £2 to sit in the bisley stand which is fairly new all seated covered stand which accommodates 580 away fans and has a bar underneath for a half time pint and various pasties, pies etc where you can watch the h/t scores on ssn.
However you could sit/stand in the temporary seating behind the goal but you're open to the elements, so i'd advise you to go for the bisley.
For ales beforehand, theres 2 wetherspoons a 2 minute walk from the station but if you like your real ales ask for the murrenger, again 2 minutes walk from station. ALTERNATIVELY theres several pubs around the ground namely, the dodger, ivy bush, riverside tavern and Clarence club, which are all on the way as you cross the bridge towards the ground, although OB stopped sarfend going in there Saturday, but walk another 50yards down the road and you'll see the ivy bush, and another 50 yards or so further are the dodger and Clarence club by the shell garage just past the cenotaph.
as for nightclubs, theres a few mostly situated on stow hill or in the vicinity, but if you're in your 40's like my try the pen and wig, again on stow hill(pub/ with a disco upstairs 80's music mainly) which is ok still so I've heard but I haven't been in their for years. i'm usually steaming before 11. HOPE this helps

ed look at post ABOVE to Geoff, all modern toilets in the new bisley, I don't know what the facilities are like behind the goal. No Jamie stephens wont be playing we've got one of the best keepers in the lower leagues in lenny pidgeley.
He was on the bench in the champions league final for Chelsea a few years back and is our number 1, but stephens looks one for the future TBH. Had a cracking game when we beat brighton down there, but made a few mistakes at Northampton, but like I said as soon as lenny got over his problems he was always going to come straight back in but he'll probably start at Braintree in fa cup IMO.

Would you consider suffering fools gladly? You'll get more responses if you're OK with that.

It is Pools by the way. We used to be Hartlepools United and the s has stuck. Pool can mean Liverpool or Blackpool but we're the only Pools.

appologies mate, I should have known having worked with many pools fans over the years(mostly cable pullers) as im a spark and have got many good friends from that part of the country

BTW forgot to say if you pre-order your tickets beforehand and not on the day, you'll save £2 , not a lot I know but better than FA.

you're all better off going in the away part of bisley, as not only will you keep dry, but will be able to create a good noise in there, and theres a bar underneath for a h/t beer

I don't know even if you can get a beer if you went in the synter end temporary seats behind the goal ( holds about 500), but every club like southend Saturday ,who have tried to make a noise, its almost impossible to,and they got a right soaking, so for the extra £2, i'd definitely get tickets for the bisley.

if you're pre ordering tickets make sure you state bisley stand seats £20 on the day, £18 in advance, and those of you who'd rather go behind the goal, knock £2 off those prices but feck that.

Good shout that mate probably is on par with boro. I'd stay in either Bristol or Cardiff if staying overnight.

Probably Cardiff would be my choice but bristols more than ok

No disrepect, Hartlepool isn't great, just like real ale and good pubs and Newport and Boro have very few. Newport and Boro very similar in lots of ways, no more so than both have Transporter bridges, only 2 places left in Britain to have them now I believe, there were around 6 at one time. :o

Well like I posted earlier the murrenger is the place for you if you like your real ales. Plenty of selection in their mate and again in the high st 2 mins away from the station, although I can see you're driving down so just ask. It's the oldest pub in Newport dating back to the 14th century if my memory serves me right ( google it ).
Alternatively theres a little back street pub in the centre called baileys bodega, and that would defo be the place for you.
guest ales every week, old peculiar, London pride, brains sa etc and many more.
i'm a lager man but a few mates insist in going in their when we go on the piss for the same reasons as you, and although it is relatively quiet they do have live bands on the weekends. check that one out, probably be your best bet. Hope that helps pal

Thanks, will see how it goes. This game has in all respects the makings of our lowest turnout of the season, but the fact a lot of our lot won't of seen pools play at Newport, last time we visited Somerton Park, was 1988 and strangely enough that was a Friday game, so may bump up the away support a bit, possibly around 150-200 of whom I would imagine would be of the older variety such as myself. Managed to get to Somerton Park myself but it was for a non league game around 1990 ,v Solihull I think when I was working down south and saw them as a non league club at Swindon Supermarine in the FA cup once.

How the hell does that prepare him for the future?

It might make him a sophisticated young man. After all, he wouldn't want to be like his dad, would he?

I don't believe you really think reading shakespear makes you more sophisticated.

You are too intelligent to think that.

And. your not a gay actor.

Great Fires of London Parmo rakxe

That had to be the worst written kids show ever.

I could cheerfully pummel Elvis Cridlington and Bella Lasagne to within an inch of their puppet lives rakxe

'He's always on the scene'... He should be in the 'Still Gay' thread by the sounds... confised

aye Sam must be Norman's dad.. Phyliss is definitely getting her firebox put out by his hose I'm sure of it

any road up on a related theme ...last time I went to Newport was after Pools got pummelled at Bristol Rovers. There was a replacement bus service from Bristol Parkway to Swansea (where I was staying for a piss up), so I had to change back to the train at Newport. As soon as I stepped off the bus a lad came hurtling towards me with arms outstretched and lips puckered up, which startled me... only for him to run straight past (although I'm not sure if straight is the correct word entirely) into the arms of the bloke behind me ...at which point I said "I'M FREEEEE... " John Inman stylee (cos he's not dead really...)

croeso y cas gwent indeedy

We know exactly what you mean, ncfc. I'll hold him down and you get the syringe ready.

Oh thats right, taking sides with a welsh welshman who may just be luring you into a false sense of friendship.

Well dont come running to me when he asks you to dress in a sheep costume.

Mr NCFC how exactly do you not tolerate idiots? And are buffoons the same?

I need answers.
