This Yid argument

Thats been blown up in last couple of days just wanted to know peoples thoughts on it.

I am on the fence about it surely people can refair to themselves however they want I think the elephant in the room is the fact that its then used by idiot opposition fans chanting about gas chambers etc.

The ironic thing is a lot of Spurs fans arnt even jewish.

Don't see the problem to be honest, seems to me like its spurs fans defending their strong Jewish links. West Ham/Chelsea whatever, would attack them for it anyway, whether white hart lane reverberated to 'yid army' or not. So they might as well embrace their Jewish roots and show the idiots singing about auschwitz that they're proud of the connection. Daniel Levy is Jewish and I've never heard anything from him asking the spurs fans to stop singing it because it might offend one or two.

Seems to me more like spurs fans who aren't Jewish are just trying to show solidarity to those who are when other clubs attack them for it. If anything, I wouldn't discourage it, because overtime the word could possibly ameliorate into a more positive term.

Just another excuse for some political correctness.

To be honest, I'm beginning to give up under the weight of all the people I'm supposed to be supporting against discrimination. I know it matters. I know people should be challenged when they discriminate against other people, but personally I can't be doing it so much anymore.

People now seem to have to be black, gay, jewish, catholic, roma or some other epithet. What happened to just being a human being? I'm going to start a campaign in favour of being fully human and not becoming just a definition.

Meanwhile, of course, brain-dead chanters at football matches should all be executed on the spot..........

I have been to that the que outside before a match is massive but worth the wait.

Colonel Sanders' beard and southern accent don't actually constitute proof that he was a Klan member and Rolf still has to face trial but mud sticks so you keep up your boycott.

Speaking AS a Yid....frankly I am not bothered one way or the other. One can always find more 'footy-related' chants to taunt an opposition crowd with. As for race/religion? Well they don't really do as much verbal damage to the opposition fans , say as, "Your'e not famous any more" or any sort of chant that infer's "cheating", "waste of money" and any reference to "safe breaking" ! IMO.

Over the years I've known quite a lot of Jewish people, some religious some not, some strongly zionist others not at all. None of them have ever called themselves yids in the 'reclaim the word' way that some young black Americans call themselves niggers.

I can see the argument for doing that with language but I can't see how Spurs fans can claim they're doing it when few of them are actually Jewish. Do you know if it is something some Jews are trying to do or is it purely a Spurs fan thing?

A good mate of mine is a Spurs fan (regularly bought a season ticket but is too busy now) and Jewish. I've seen him happily chant 'yido' in a football context, although i don't think he's consciously reclaiming the word. Indeed, he plays down his Jewish identity and i suspect the chant, for him, is simply a football thing.

Sorry....have been busy with work. In answer to your question Mr Born, I think the cultural issue 'Jewishness' is a generational thing. My parents and their parents would be baffled and somewhat insulted by the term Yids. However ( and this is my own view ) many of my generation and younger tend to view the term as more endearing than an insult. I suppose it's the cultural impact that American Jews have had on us and by that I mean your Woody Allen's and writers such as Michael Wex and Shalom Auslander. Like generations in most cultures, the young rebel against the older/stricter generation....we are no different!
Also there is the fact that to be Jewish doesn't mean you go around in a black hat, being 100% kosher ( yes mother I am eating kosher) and observing 24 hours a day. Most British and U.S Jews are Reform/Liberal Jews (I am a Reform Jew myself....basically we split from Orthodox Judaism in the early C19th....just like your Protestant Reformation in the 1500s).I keep the holidays and Shabbat every Friday, but I am also an ordinary Brit like anyone else. I find humour within my upbringing (don't we all?) and can laugh at aspects....the late Dave Allen did it all the time within Christianity.
As for Spurs fans....I dare say there are some who see "Yid" as a sort of badge of honour....maybe the club secretly is encouraging all London Jews to support them? Personally I'll stick with Pools......and being a good bloke and a good Yid.
