I've just bought myself a heart monitor for use on my bike. I know the general idea is to ride it and come home knackered but not too knackered but when you get to 40 you need to be a bit careful.

My resting heart rate is showing 63 at the moment, my plan is that during exercise I will be doing a mixture of sprint training and endurance.

Anyone know a formula to calculate where he maximum should be? I've tried a few off the interwebby but they look to be bollox. They take your body mass into account which in my case has never worked. I've always been stocky and heavy for my height and even when I was younger and at the peak of my fitness I was allegedly obese.

At 50 years old I was using the recommendations for 20-year olds on the gym bike.
It went up to peaks of 150-160 bpm. This was after maybe 6 months regular use. I never felt I was exceeding my capacities. At the time I weighed 85 kilos.

Hope this helps.

When I was running long distance on a regular basis, the general consensus for max. heart rate was 220 minus your age. When I did timed sprint training, my max used to get up into the 160's.

he was simply referring to the fact that you have to be careful when you get to 40. Mr I unfortunately has more annual rings than that!!! I can remember seeing Mr I at Pools in the early 80's when he came home from duty, fully resplendant in his uniform and green beret !!!!

How on earth do you know how many kilos you weigh(ed)? That's really impressive
Stick with stones and pounds meself, partly because I can't be bothered to learn how to convert them and partly because you sound thinner in pre metric terms

I'm 44 now. I was 19 at the time. Parmo is correct, I meant that after you reach 40 you need to be careful. Mind you there was probably a bit on denial that there's half a decade to add on to being 40.

So how many stones is that then :wink wink:

There's no secret in working in kilos really grabec: all you have to do is spend over 20 years in a place where stones and pounds don't exist!
