Never forget the first time I met Gus Di Lella.

We were at the ground waiting for the bus to take us to the game and he turned up with Budgie Burridge and he introduced us to him as a new player we were looking at.

Gus spoke very little English and someone tried to spark up a conversation with him,to which Budgie shouts "watch him mind he eats dogs".


Poor Gus stood there watching us all fall apart in fits and not understanding why. We never found out why Budgie called him a dog eater.

Great charachter is Gud Di Lella.

Not so sure about him eating dogs but I know he just leaves his chicken out on the window cill in clear view of direct sunshine to defrost then just necks it!

Seen him train down at Sherburn sports centre running the length of the footy pitches dragging a tractor tyre behind him tied to his waist with a length of auld rope! Upper torso muscles rippling to the max, what a physique the little Argentinian has!

I remember when my lad was mascot, alot of the players did the usual, signing autographs, posing for photographs etc, but Gus couldn't have enough time with him and chatted at length as they shared a plate of chips in Victoria Loung which I found quite amusing as Senor Di Lella's Engleesh was very limited and the bairn's Spanish was non existant.

One iconic image of GD-L was his goal celebration infront of the Town End whipping his shirt off and waving it about his head like a mad man.

Good luck to him at Horden CW what the yakkers make of him remains to be seen!
