South Africa's police chief says officers who killed 34 striking miners were acting in self defence.

Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega defended the bloodshed at the Lonmin PLC platinum mine in Marikana, in Rustenburg, on Thursday.

She told a news conference officers were forced to "utilise maximum force to defend themselves" when they were charged by armed protesters.

She said 78 people were wounded in the violence and 259 arrested on charges from public disorder to murder.

The trouble began when police were laying out barbed wire barricades to separate the 3,000 striking drill operators into "smaller groups more manageable for police to disarm", Ms Phiyega added.

Could SA descend into political/class chaos again..?

Me too.
They did the same thing in WW2. they were arming both sides and making a fortune. Now they will be supplying spears to one side and guns to the other.

They should not get away with it. As SA is part of the commonwealth they shoul be getting supplied by BAe
or whatever they are called.

I was just thinking when I seen them on Telly yesterday doing the war dances with their machetes and spears that they slipped into the old tribal ways very easily.

As they had already dispatched 2 cops and ten non strikers the previous day, I find it hard to blame the law from opening up when the mob charged.
