Got a message saying 'death.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Well I've been getting these similar things saying 'svchost.exe has...ect etc'

Anyway, smelling a bit of a rat with death.exe, I ran a virus scan and it came up with three problems, two of which it quarantined and one which it won't in the System32 files. Something like /mccdll. Try to quarantine it and it denies access, same with cleaning it. It's called Infostealer.gamos.

The only thing its arsing around with seems to be the games module but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

Can I get rid of the bastard or do I admit defeat and re-install windows??

check out what it is death.exe = virus http://www.glocksoft.com/trojan_list/Lamers_Death.htm

if you are missing '.dll' files or you think they are corrupt go to http://www.dll-files.com and find the exact one there and make sure you put it on your desktop then find you system32 file and put it in there to replace the corrupt one!

Hope that helps, a little bit!

Thanks Mr Chin, I followed some excellent user friendly instructions from Symantec and I think I've swatted the bastard. It had me tinkering around in the registry which I'm not really competent to do, but it seems to have worked. It did what it said it should do anyway.

Nasty little fu ckers aren't they?? rage rage

It directs you exactly what to do, but seen as though you have paid £90 for the files once im sure you know the crack on how to fix it!

Guess again. I've winkled the little bastard out and quarantined it. cleaned the startup up programme list, cleaned the registry, updated the anti-virus programme and run it in safe mode, enabled the firewall and every other anti bug trick I know and STILL the little bastard comes back.

You deleted all the temp internet files and all temp files?

Go to RUN > type in msconfig > click 'start up' and then click disable all.

restart the PC on the prompt

Go to Run again type this in %TEMP% and delete everything in that folder see if that makes and difference! not sure it will, but worth a try isnt it!

I did something similar, deleted all my cookies and cleared out the Temp Internets and then cleaned the registry again, SEEMS to have worked cross fingers, if it fucks up tomorrow for the match I'll launch the bastard through the window.
