I really fail to understand the whole fuss St Patricks day thing in England. I'm English as are most of the people wandering round with those daft hats on. It's completely irrelevant unless you're a penny whistle playing, soda bread eating, semtex buying mick.

St Patricks day has only gotten big over the last few years here & its all because of a big Guinness promotions drive.

Catholic school though isn't it so they'll always be paddycentric. Its the same reason why most of the school uniforms at Catholic primary schools involve a green jumper.

As for Cathod, I can't take them seriously as long as the Vatican remains so fabulously wealthy but tells all of the Caholics to donate to this and that without lifting even an arse cheek themselves.

Which is why our own Saints day should be celebrated  I do anyway but why don't others?

St George's Day is a non event 'cos St George was a nonentity. He wasn't even English and he didn't do anything worthy of note, even in legend.

Slew a dragon?? Mickey Nelson'd do three a game and still keep a clean sheet.

The only reason I want US ENGLISH to celebrate 23rd April is because we must be one of the only countries in the world that doesn't celebrate our own saint/independence etc....but we celebrate others!!!!

Name me another country that goes as mental as 'we' do for another Countries 'Holiday' as 'we' do for the Irish!!!! confised

And it makes it worse in my book when people try and make excuses like....why should we, he isn't even English!!!!

It's not an excuse though. I'm all for a national day, just don't pin it on a fodgy!! If Paddy wasn't Irish and they still celebrate then all well and good. Sounds fairly typical to me but there's no need for us to follow suit. I mean 'For England and St Portugese George??' Rubbish!!

If we're going to have a day it should be VE Day when the British, having stood up for themselves for five years, prevailed. THAT'S worth celebrating, not some rusty old foreign gadgy.

I agree kev...but think of all the self flagellating. gits who would get the vapours at the very idea of us celebrating something to do with the war.....the Guardian would self combust in shock rolfl

Cop this. Last Friday, my little 'uns school, St Teresas, shunned Red Nose Day and had to wear Green for St Patricks Day, with funds raised going to CAFOD instead of Comic Relief!

Now I love the school, love the ethos and principles of the place but the kids that I spoke to were GUTTED about not being able to wear their Red Noses and t-shirts on non-uniform day like the rest of the town.

Begorrah!

As you'll probably know, the missus works in a Catholic School; the reason they don't do Comic Relief is that the Dioecesis don't allow it. Comic Relief, you see, as part of it's Aids in Africa campaign, promotes the use of contraception.

We used to have a day to celebrate Britain, the 24th May.
Admittedly it was a very colonialist thing and was not specifically English.

The French celebrate the storming of the Bastille. We didn't need to storm a prison fortress.
The Irish celebrate getting rid of all their snakes. We liked our snakes so we kept them.
The Dutch don't seem to be able to agree what exact date in April is their national day: 13th, 19th, 30th?
The Yanks celebrate their independence from us but seem to make more of a meal about some natives offering a bunch of lost White people some berries.
The Italians celebrate the establishment of a republican democracy in 1948. Boring.
The Germans do their national holiday on the day the wall came down. That's an idea, we could have ours on the day Hadrian's wall went up. That's the best I can think of so far anyway.
