Though I think I'd leave myself a bit more than 7 hours to do a 24 mile walk in a big monkey suit

and that's for fit chaps - not those who appear to be 'big boned' - good effort by that man.

i seem to recall that when a pal joined the TA (i know it's not 'military' Mr I) he had to be able to run 3 mile in 24 minutes which weren't really too difficult but to do that walk in that time he'll need a good pace.

wolviston to thorpe thewles and along the a66 back rd to sedberge if i was him - cheeky short cut.

Here's some comparisons from the major military tests which involve long yomps: (Admittedly these have hills and rucksacks involved)

Royal Marines Commmando course 30 miler: = 8 hours
Parachute Regiment 'P' Company endurance test: 20 miles in under 4.5 hours.
Special Forces Selection: Long drag endurance test: 40 miles in 20 hours.

How about 40 miles in 9 hrs 20 mins! I nearly did it again this year but thought better of it!

In all seriousness, when training for the 40 miles, it took me weeks to get up to 20 miles, and that took a good 5 hours first time I went that far. And I'm in reasonable general shape. If you're not, just walking that far without preparation will be very tough.
