I might be wrong, but I reckon The Bunker has a disproportionate amount of ex-English Martyrs members. Nowt wrong with that like, but I wonder why Proddies are under-represented on here?

Because you're all condemned to the bowels of hell. It says so in the catechism.

Could it be because if you are Catholic in Hpool, you've got no other choice than to go to Martyrs? Proddydogs in town had Henrys, Dykey, Brierton and Manor plus nobs school Tunstall.

Numbers wise, what percentage of the Hartlepool population are Catholics do you reckon?

I nearly went there, and I'm an atheist.

From being quite young I was always interested in Catholicism, as my grandad had turned his back on it to marry my Protestant gran. I think it caused a bit of chew in the family, but I don't know the details.

A lot of my half-cousins went to Martyrs, and what used to fascinate me as a scruffy Briertoner was the fact that they weren't allowed to take their tie off until they got home. I always thought this was some kind of civil rights infringement. At Brierton they stopped making you wear a tie after a few weeks of your first year there!

They will be, but I'm not convinced about the bloke at the top. Only from personal experience of course, but Mutley's comment about Catcote (the old Southbrooke) tells the story. Unfortunately Mut, there ARE Catholic kids going there now, kids whould SHOULD be at EMS if they didn't care quite as much about results, League Tables and percentage games.

banghead banghead banghead

you are right on JH but the team as a whole out weigh him
that bloke called our Bernadette Colette for all her time in school
never seen a class room but that is the ?
"the new head system" they are managers now

I remember reading an article in the mail some years ago when it was said that in the town's population of 95,000 there were about 14,000 Catholics.

What puzzled me was, how come they were all on the housing committee?

Could this be why Brierton is set for closure? Most of my Owton Manor friends went there and your right, it was like a Holiday Camp compared to our strict regime!

I was shocked when I heard Brierton was due to close. But then thinking about the size of the school and the challenges it faced when I was there over 15 years ago its not surprising.

And at the time it was seen as much better than Manor, Henrys and Dykey. How times change.

Brierton is being closed to build an 'Education Village' and the kids attending will be decanted to the other schools which will mean that from the fens to high tunstall and dyke house including seaton there will be three schools instead of four and when they are all running at full subscription will make it difficult to get in unless they make the schools bigger of course stpid

But if brierton doesn't close then the town misses out on the 90m BSF money

Sacrificial lamb springs to mind.

The present Brierton site or 'Education Village will house catcote school and a centre for dissaffected kids who will no doubt be put on 'Vocational courses'

Just a guess like

I went to st micks in billingham, which was the most uncatholic school you could imagine full of the most uncatholic catholics you could imagine. my oldest 2 go to english martyrs and it is a canny school but the religion itself long ago ceased to mean anything to me.

Do the nobs extend to those who first joined from the old Tech? :uhoh:
AH the Tech...I'm going all misty eyed remembering my very first day when I got the strap.....as he as about to administer the blows, Mr Rawlings said..."this is a very inauspicious start to your time at this educational establishment"...I hadn't a clue what he was on about

Henry's was indeed a holiday camp, even way back in the late seventies/early eighties when I was there.

Teachers could try to inspire me, interest me, involve me, cajole me, set an example to me, but ...... I always responded best to violent intimidation from the teaching staff.

Mike Weston, still around Durham, made his debut the same day. John Dee from Hartlepool Rovers won his first England honours shortly afterwards. "We had a tremendous team in those days," says Stan.

It was 'the strap' in my time there. Psychos is the right description of the Woodwork teacher Mr Kirtley, and Mr Sanderson (Maths?)

I missed the old Henry's by one year in 1978!!!! My grandad was the school electrician/lab technician, and used to look after me during the school holidays and I used to go to the old Henry's with him if he had to go in!!!!
I remember Mr Sanderson in maths, also Johnny Dee in PE
