......i'm thinking of paying to have a leaflet printed with large lettering saying "We do NOT always have to pass the fucking ball forwards" and distributing it to the DICKHEADS in the Mill House seats who seem to think we do.

Not just talking about last night, I've heard the same dopey voices shouting it when we've done well and won. If these twats know so little about the game in general, they would be better off keeping their big yaps shut.

Strange thread, we went backwards over and over last night and it was extremely frustrating to watch. I can understand anybody who was complaining at that.

I think keeping possession is great when we are two or three up, but when we are one down......................

Isn't keeping possession even more important when we are losing, if we lose the ball then the opposition are given further chance to stifle our chances of scoring, while we've still got the ball there is still the chance, albeit currently slim chance, that we might score.

It depends how you look at it Mr billog. Weaving pretty patterns all over the pitch is very effective if you are one or two up....but if you are behind the emphasis is to score a goal.
As NC has said..........when you're behind the opposition goal expects to be bombarded.
Or maybe the best way forward is to keep possession ????? You choose.

Usually wears a dark blue trackie, wispy hair and talks bollocks, always shouts " c`mon Pooooools", stands with half a dozen other blokes in front of second barrier up to the left of the goal( if stood behind).

Are you for real? keeping the ball/possession is just as important when you are 1-0 down as opposed to being 1-0 up. Anyone with half a decent footballing brain knows that if you have the ball the other team cant play. As for passing the ball backwards, their is nothing wrong with that, its called building play from the back, look at all the best teams and that is what they do.

If you or anyone else think pumping the ball upfield is going to work then i want you to tell me what players have we got who are going to hold up the ball?

When you have answered that one you might try and tell me who we have got who can keep the ball for any sort of period.

Then of course you can then try and tell me which teams actually want to play when they are in front at the VIC.

Have you not watched any home games this season where teams have gone ahead and then defied us to score.

And on top of that you ask me am I for real.

Give your head a shake man.

You said a bit further up that the passing game is good when we are a couple of goals ahead but not when we are 1-0 down so what other style of play are you talking about? Youve also questiond whether the best way forward is to keep possesion? that is the quote which has baffled me? if we dont have the ball we arnt going to score are we?

I would agree that most teams who are away from home and go a goal up will sit back and defend but the best way to break teams like that down if we havnt got a powerful presence upfront is to try and pass the ball about and pull there players out of position and look for an opening even if that means having to play the ball backwards.

To be honest with you I don't think we have any sort of passing game that can be sustained for any period of time.
We have proven that our ability to keep the ball is woeful.
We are a league one side, not a premiership side. We have never, at any time this season, demonstrated that we can keep the ball for any sort of sustained period.
Our shots on target stats prove that we are generally incapable of mounting any sort of sustained challenge on the opposition goal.
We don't have the players to do what you want, I wish we did.
Where in Pools present set up have we the players to pull opposition players out of position????
You are talking about what is the ideal set up and I am talking about what we have.
I would dearly love to see Pools dragging teams all over the place and keeping possession but at the moment that scenario is fantasy.
We simply have not got the players to do it.

There has been only one team that has played possession football at the vic in and that was Leyton Orient last season even the keeper played as a sweeper that night, we will never be able to play that way.

the current bunch who have been the mainstays of the team for the past 4 years will never be able to play that way
Half a dozen new players with the good young'uns we have coming through = new start, and a chance to build an exciting team

I understand your point and obviously I want us in procession but this isn't the case when we go Back over. The ball goes to Murray, he is then looking for monky liddle or Sweeney. All 3 players time and time again last night were in no mans land. He then jinked and turned and eventually he plays it back to the back 4. Yes we still have the ball but then what happens??

1 of 2 things it is lumped forward were the big black guy wind the ball
Back for oldham or it is played to flinders and he either spoons it or the big black guy wins procession again. This happened over and over last night and was very frustrating. We don't have the midfield to play like the Spanish as mentioned in the keep ball manner they do. We go back then lose it, simple as that.

Like I said I'm all for knocking passes about and keeping the ball but that's just not what happens. It always ends in a big Punt forward and we then lose the ball and IMO that's very frustrating to watch, and as derwent pointed out it's worse when your 1 down

i thought exeter played some lovely passing football at the vic earlier in the season, i dont think the keeper lumped a ball long at all that day, they were great to watch but just lacked a finishing touch.

mk dons passed us off the park too.

Im not expecting us to go and play like spain or barcalona. Weve played some half decent football this season when weve tried to pass it and weve put some good moves together. Pass the ball and keeping the ball isnt rocket science and i believe we have got players who are capable of doing that. Away at huddersfield we played some great football in the second half we just couldnt put the chances away so it proves we can do it we are just lacking that last touch upfront to finish it off.

No one is suggesting we can play like the top sides but that is what you are unconsciously suggesting we should do.
Pools haven't got the players to play keepball for sustained periods and then consistently play the killer pass that creates a goal.
Instead we try and get the ball into the opposition box in the hope that something will fall for us, and invariably it doesn't.
The theme that Cooper keeps putting forward is lack of quality and he's right. Until he gets that quality that you want to see and, believe it or not, that I want to see as well, and what we both subsequently want to happen just isn't going to happen.
Being the best side on display doesn't count. The game at Preston is living proof of this.
We all have different views on the solution. Mine is we need creativity and someone to finish that creativity. Keeping the ball is one thing...........keeping the ball to produce results is another.
Possession without creativity achieves nothing.
This season too many teams have come to the Vic knowing they had a very good chance of a point and a good chance of three and set their stall out to achieve that.
We just don't have the guile or expertise to effectively combat that.
Away from home we have had more success because we set up in a similar fashion, or we did early on.
Against Oldham last night the majority in the crowd knew that we are not capable of playing through teams for sustained periods and creating chances through crisp attacking possession football, so were urging the players to get it into the box in the hope that something would fall for us, which is the tactics we've adopted at home for too long now.
It's not that the crowd are clueless or know nothing about the game, it was because as the game wore on they thought that was the only way we were going to get an equaliser. In the end we didn't get one and one of the worse teams I have seen at the Vic went away with the points.
None of us agree with these tactics but recognise that the creativity coming from midfield is a joke, as well as that we haven't any widemen capable of taking men on and whipping in crosses and therefore resort to crosses from our full backs or hoofball punts up the middle in the hope we'll get a knock on.
What you want to see is no different from what the rest of us want to see but you are not going to get it from our current squad.
The majority seem to think a very deep cull is required and I tend to agree with them.
Then, and only then, the manager may be able to fashion a team that can produce what both you and I would like to see.

Murray and Liddle are two of the most negative midfielders ever to play for Pools. They both constantly play the ball either backwards or sideways, rarely forwards. And people are wondering why we don't score many. As well as playing midfielders up front of course.

There's a few posters on this thread who need sitting down on a chair and being told how the game of football is played.

Isn't that Murray's game though....break up play and find and play the easy option....as opposed to spraying the ball 30 yards here there and everywhere and then losing possesion???? sctatchinghead

Murray has been our most consistent player this season....by doing what he does best....and that is why he'll be player of the year by a mile!!!! :coool:
