The earliest known surviving photo of Hartlepools United, used in away programme at Middlesbrough A on 6-3-1909.

I can't help looking at a photograph of that era and wonder how many of those young men died in France within a few years.

My memory going but the squad consisted of the player's below. Thanks to MJ and ITMC I got those names.

Jack Bennett
Bobbie Billam
Fred Black
Tommy Brown
Frank Edgley
Joshie Fletcher
Jacky Hand
Dick Hegarty
Tom Hegarty
Jack Hogg
John Kelly
William Ledger
Willie McIver
Christopher Smith
Arthur Swift
Benny Thompson
Freddie Tweddle
Steve Tweddle

Looking at shirts far left back row would be McIver, as he was the goalkeeper according to ITMC, which has date as 25-03-09, which is different from the date the original poster of the picture states. Which is on the facebook page.

My apologies to original poster on Facebook I must have clicked on 1909/10 not 1908/09 which means the goalkeeper is Fred Mearns and the list of names is wrong. My apologies to all again and thanks to MJ for putting it right. It class picture and MrI makes a very good point.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the picture. I extend it to the people who actually watched the match.
" The war to end all wars" eh.

Is that Chip on the grass at the front left??????

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the photo? Willie McIver was my great Grandad and I am building up a photographic history of his football career. I do have a gold medal he won whilst he was playing at Hartlepool. I will try and scan it and attach it to this forum.

I have this photo in its original form in the program seeing as fetbob taxed it from wherever else I posted it although mr miver is not in this photo. If you go to http://inthemadcrowd.co.uk/cgi-bin/itmc ... p?oid=1044 you will see his photo that I chopped fom a Blackburn team photo and passed to madjohn
