When I moved down here I got a second job in a bar just to meet a few people and continued doing it.

I was just nattering with my boss and he recons I can claim some money back of tax as at present being a second job get taxed to the hilt on basic rate 20%. He said ring up the tax people explain that I have a second job and I have to buy a new uniform, more washing etc and more travel etc and me working 5 hours on a night one of these will just go on tax. He recons I will get some money back, dont know if this is true like but wanted to ask if anyone on here has done it or can but it a better way to explain to the tax man?

My mate who is from Hartlepool but now lives in Aberdeen took a job as a bouncer up there for a few years, paid tax etc. on it. He didn't know at the time but his tax code was different to rest of the lads on his main job (lorry driver) because he had a second job. He was paying more tax than them, this was only discovered by accident when the rest of his workmates were getting bigger bonuses than him. He was advised to contact the tax office by HR at work which he did. He had stopped the job as a bouncer 4 years earlier but his tax code for his main job hadn't changed. The tax office sent him a rebate of 5 or 6 grand because he had still been paying the higher rate after he finished. It's your main job that gets the higher rate of tax applied to it.

I'm no expert on it compo but that's what my mate was told. I can't remember the exact figure but I think he was paying 33% tax on his main job. I'll ring him and ask.

if the company supplies your uniform and it has the company name/logo on it you can claim £60 a year laundry costs backdated for up to 6 years.
dont use the company who sent the letter out they claim 30% of your refund.
simply ring your tax office (the one your company head office uses) and it can be done over the phone and they will explain the procedure to you.
basically it involves you writing them a letter asking for your laundry allowance.
but they dont send you a cheque out now they simply amend this years tax code but you still end up getting your money

Do yourself a favour mate and do not take advice from message boards (no offence anyone) social network sites, people in pubs or google when it comes to tax ! go and see an accountant, you may be able to claim all kinds including help with accomodation and utility bills, its a very complex and ever changing system, and its full of suprises, its possible you might end up worse of.

good luck and i hope you get sommat

totally agree if you are self employed but an accountant will cost the average paye punter more than the £60 laundry allowance

As much as we'd like to have as many tax free allowances as jobs the FACT is you only get one per year .. if you're earning a fair wedge at your primary day job (which I assume you will be nowing your background) I supsect your allowance ( I think its about £7,475 per year) will be set against this. This leaves your 2nd income needing to be taxed in full at the going rate currently 20%.. Another if you pay HIGHER rate tax in your primary employment (ie if you get paid £35 000 or above from your primary employment) your FULL WAGE at your secondary employment will be liable for tax at the higher rate of 40% and not the 20% it currently is .. So if you're paying higher rate tax on your first job I wouldn't even bother asking for your £60 back as it could end up costing you a lot more!

DISCLAIMER I'm not an accountant but someone with a bit of knowledge of the situation and a bit of common sense.
