Its like my aunty when talking about her childhood in Albany street apparently there was a west Indian bloke who lived there called Albert. To this day my aunty refairs to him as "Nigger Albert" and doesnt see this as offensive even though I have said it numerous times. What she doesnt also seem to grasp is when I say why did you call him that "so we knew who we were talking about", when asked if there was any other Ablerts living on the street she says "no" and cant seem to see the logic in my question.

I'm fairly sure the word "gay" has totally different connotations compared to its original context a hundred years ago. Language evolution - old terminologies attatched fall off, and new ones stick in their place
