Was Wild Man Fischer 2nd - don't suppose any of you are old enough to remember him - was a roadie for Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention for a while. Hilarious yet rather sad.

So the fact that he can't sing at all only drone on, does not seem to be a disqualification then ?

I think/thought Liam Gallagher had a good voice, it doesn't seem to have the power that it used to but Oasis performances in the mid 90's at places like Maine Road, Loch Lomand and Knebworth were awesome....

Q is obsessed with doing lists and 'top 100s' which is a shame cos they often do some decent interviews and features otherwise.

obviously technique isn't the only criterion, but after only glancing through I didn't see any opera singers in there? Or does that genre not apply here?? confised

My personal favourite vocalists are Paul Rodgers and Ronnie James Dio

I subscribed to Q for a few years, but stopped about 3 years ago precisely because they seemed to have the top 50 or 100 something every other month. It said to me that they wanted the publicity that a list generates - we're talking about it on here for example - probably because no-one will agree with it.

Sandy Denny anyone?

These so-called surveys piss me right off..... do they ask a representative audience, do they hell. It's always popular thing on the news where they say the top film of all time is ... Easy Rider... everyone says surely not, until you read it was selected by 'U.S Bike Rider' magazine from a survey amongst 12 of its readers

Stopped subscribing to Q magazine a year ago. they were actually very polite when trying to get me back but it wont happen. Too many covers of scissor sisters, robbie williams etc for me.
Anyway, this list...is it compiled by Q "experts" or was it a vote by the public? The latter might suggest why Liam has got to number eleven.
As for Neil Young being 65th or whatever, well I like the feller but he is certainly not the 65th best singer in the world.
I love Jake Burns too but to suggest him to me means you would have to have Shane MaGowan in there as well.

which is why you will get the results with these types of lists.

could have listed several others - frank black, weller, ian mcnabb, karen carpenter, ian brown but got fed up at five really - however you tend to pick singers of the music you like surely - there again i like the fall but would never but mr smith in the top list

I always liked Mark Morrison he had a totally unique voice.

He could have done far better for himself under the right guidance.

i dont mind a bit of radiohead from time to time but even thom yorke himself has never claimed to be much of a singer. in fact i think, being a music buff himself, he would probably be a tad embarrassed by his lofty position. he can hold a tune but i dont think he has much of a vocal range.

certainly not in the same league as say jeff buckley, who musicologists always rave about. apparently he had the same vocal range as pavarotti. not my cup of tea, but he could certainly sing.

interestingly saltys mate, from maximo park had this to say for himself in the same magazine:

in every generation theres a band that comes along and changes things. without being arrogant, i think we're that band.

what are they gonna be changing ? lighbulbs ? nappies ? the batteries in the bairns remote controlled dalek ?

in the last interview i read with them he was comparing maximo park favourably with the smiths.

does the blokes ego know no bounds ? rolfl

well, they certainly aren't in the Smiths league, but to be fair, who is?!

still, a good band and I likes em.....and I like the fact that they're from round 'ere :sweeeet:

Well I like Bon Scott, but I wouldn't put him above Freddy Mercury (sorry Phil  ) - and If Bon Scott is there why isn't Brian Johnson (far better IMHO)

And (waits for derision) - what about Dean Martin (better than Sinatra - again IMHO)

Finally - What about Doris Day

I had Q Magazine every month, our little 'un bought me a subscription every Christmas. Take out the word 'Essential' and you lose 20 pages. Take out the style ads (not the gig ads or the release ads) and you lose another 20. Take out the 'Top 100' and you lose another ten. Take out the articles on rappers shooting each other/getting arrested/dissing in the hood, there goes another ten. Delete the references to iPod, drop another ten. Take out Madonna/Robbie Williams/Beyonce Knowles and you've got a three pound crossword. The gig listings are out of date as the subscribers get say, June issue on 2nd May.

You might as well read the toilet roll.

that list is a total fabrication....otherwise it would have in it at least in the top ten the only artist to have a top hit in the 50's,60's,70's,80's,90's and I'm sure he has plenty of time to do the 00's...........coz even he has to die and then the re-release will find him a whole new crowd of fans, which will make him cool again.......

who is he............?

bag of sh1te that list mind. best singer implies technical ability doesn't it but thats not what rock music is about, for me any way its more about the feeling it gives you,the moment and the memories.
I mean I love joy division but you wouldn't have curtis in there would you nor weller who is another of my faves, and as for gallagher well I'm a big oasis fan but I wouldn't put him in there,he's not even the best singer in his own band.
