Promotion - 10

Champions 16 or 17 could be enough.....

Richard head says,

Right, we're seriously advanced enough in our promotion quest that this kind of think is no longer wishful thinking.
With a seven point cushion, promotion has never been so firmly in our own hands.

So here are the two yardsticks you need to know.

1) the promotulator

This is the number of clubs that can no longer catch us in the league.
When that reaches 21 then there are only two other clubs left besides us so promotion is guaranteed innit.

Currently Torquay and Boston can no longer catch us on points. Wrexham and Accrington could if they won every single game and we lost all ours, and then they'd have to overturn whopping great GD advantages to overtake us. So we'll call that two more teams who in the real world are never going to beat us to it.

So the promotulator stands at 4, with 17 to go to make it 21.

2) the magic promotion number

This number tells us how many more points we need to take to guarantee promotion - OR - how many points the closest challengers have to drop. Obviously when it reaches zero we're up. So for example if we win the next game against Hereford the MPN will fall by three points. If Lincoln lose or draw their next game and MK Donalds lose theirs it will fall by a further 3 points in addition to that.

So if we look at the current highest possible points totals of all the teams, we see that the fourth highest is that of Mk Donalds who can get 97 points. So to put them out of sight we theoretically *could* need 98 points, i.e., 28 more.

So 28 is your magic promotion number. Let's watch how quickly it comes down!

Sigh......

It would seem that our rivals have a deep seated hoped that Lincoln and Stockport will do their work for them and base this on nothing more than increasing despair as we stretch the lead.

Lincoln just lost at home against Hereford and Mansfield. We, on the other hand have just beaten Hereford and have doubled Mansfield to nil. It's at ours, where we've won the last nine games. I can't see why they'd think that apart from desperation. Stockport are doing well yes. So are we, very well. It's hard to score against them but after Saturday, does anyone think Nelse and Clarkie won't be furious with themselves?? It's four months since we never scored in a game, who'll be more worried, us or Stockport?? They're at home, pressures all on them. We're eleven points clear of them.

Yes I know it'll have to end sometime but you'd have to base it on more than hope!!

Sarf, your home victims have been bottom half and you couldn't beat Walsall or Swindon in your run. On the other hand we've done 'em both recently so stop crying and settle for eighth in this goddam division, Ray.

Again!!

Everyones getting excited about this run of Stockport's but when you analyse it they've beaten nobody except Walsall and Swindon - both of the latter when they were (are) having bad runs. Lets see if its so easy to overrun the mighty Pools.

We played absolute rubbish when we played them. tbh I don't think you have anything to fear, if you play half decent you will beat them

One thing for sure is that if we beat Lincoln and Stocky beat whoever they play in the meantime, one of two impressive winning sequences (in our case the second 8/9-win sequence in 20 games in case anyone has forgotten) is going to come to an end.

So why should it be Stockport's rather than ours?

Having said that, a draw will do fine for me - though Pools don't seem very good at them at the moment.

BTW Pooly mad, the promotulator has been updated since that post if you look to Saturday's posts.

The trouble with Stockport is that they're winning games and not conceding at all, which despite your incredible run is the best run of any any team in any league since the formation back in the late 19th century. Other teams have gone on vast unbeaten runs, sometimes the length of whole seasons. But Stockport have done something very special which shouldn't be ignored.
At Stockport you'd have to favour them, all things being equal, but it's a close one. I've no desire to see either team win or lose really just that one of the runs will come to an end. It should be a great game either way!

And congratulations to them. What I'm driving at is that they've just shaded what we did until the 74th minute(?)at Shrewsbury on 6th January, just a few short weeks ago. We're Hartlepool so it wasn't news.

Two more wins and we're rewriting history as well, but again we're unfashionable so no-one'll care except us!!

Of course to us and Stockport if we don't get promoted records'll be very very inconsequential.

Since 1990/91( the famous Kevin Poole debut) we have been to Edgely Park 6 times in the league and it stands at 3 wins each though they slightly edge it in total in overall meetings by 51 to 46

I didn't know that (or was too wrapped up in our own plight to take full stock) Certainly a couple of great runs and the likes of us and the rest of the league can only try and keep up. I think Stockport may be your main rivals for the Champ before long and it'll be us and MK scapping it out for third. I do care though, deeply*

Sorry to piss on your chips but a team called Hartlepool ran them close (8 games ) and got no real credit for it... Maybe its just a statement on how crap this league really is...
Does W W W W W W W W W D W D W W W W W W W
mean anything to you?

PS We've not dropped many points since then either!!

Mind you the defence have been a bit sloppy lately

You might be right there.

You are indeed on an impressive run, the only reason I've tipped Stockport is that they aren't letting any in and they are at home, but I'll willingly eat my humble pie with or without urine-soaked pomme de terre if (when?) you scalp them.

What are the other teams run ins like

Don't think that this season will be any different to the rest as we always seem to need something on the last day of the season. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong and we'll get promoted at Barnet and win the Championship at home the week after

Judging by our run-in and assuming we don't either implode horribly in a Lincolnesque kind of way or suddenly become unbeatable in a Hartleport/Stockpool kind of way then we'll finish with about 85 points.

There are 33 points available,we are 5 points in the clear therefore we need 29 to become champions, our target is 33 though.
As far as going to Edgeley Park, thats no problem, our defence is at its tightest away from home. This run has seen 7 clean sheets away from home & nobody has scored more than 1 against us.

Its an awesome run
Obviously I'd like to see us win the league, Would be dissapointed if we didnt, With the run we've had and *Touch Wood* The lack of major injuries to our squad

Can only name Porter & Boland as big players missed this season for there spells on the sidelines

a lot of those players may be off at the end of the season and it would give fans a chance to say their goodbyes.

A nice idea Chip. But it would be just as good for all the squad to be there, and to come out on the pitch for a lap of honour. It doesn't have to be just the players who play on the day who come out and take the congratulations of the crowd.

Perhaps I'm a pessimist at heart, but given early season results AND performances, I'll take third place. It just feels too greedy to ask for more.
