Good Luck to him, hope he makes a go of it...there have been seven seperate attempts to open Record Shops on Teesside in the last few years. Only "Sound It Out" remains.

He's gonna have sofas, tea, coffee, sell mags, books, cd's etc... generally be a nice place to hang out!

Specialist vinyl shops, with maybe a few CDs on the side, are the way forward. Bit of extra revenue from coffee and mags won't do any harm at all. If he lets you listen to stuff all the better!

clappp clappp clappp clappp for making the effort and I'll definitely call in next time I'm in the area. That isn't often mind so he'd better get some other customers as well.

You want friendly well informed record shop owners who aren't up their own arses. There's one in Toulouse called Labo where the owner is into latin stuff and US indie rock but he stocks anything decent he can get on vinyl- new or second hand. Always has a chat, remembers what you've bought before and recommends new stock that you might like. Doesn't over price or pretend that records are in excellent condition when they're really good at best. He shifted loads of old reggae a while back because he got the collection cheap and was happy to get €3 for a single instead of pretending it was super rare and sitting it on his website for years.

Little booths or just turntables with headphones or one turntable and no snobbery will do.

Is it in the Old Panasonic showroom on Linthorpe? Good luck to your mate, not many specialists left now, my local Dam records shut ages ago and used to often have bands playing live in store.
Hope your mate is aware of the Poundland of CDs and Dvds, Thats Entertainment is open in Boro in the old Poundland on Captain Cooks square, still big market for Vinyl to them in the know!
