Well out of order that one! It is one of the many shameful actions of the British forces in Ireland at that time and before (along with one or two since)

So what? The Irish killed a load of British soldiers and they retaliated. All killing and all war is wrong. Let's learn from past mistakes and move on. The Irish are the ones stuck in the past, not us. They still sing things at Celtic matches like "Send the Black Watch to Iraq". I don't see what all the fuss over Croke Park is about. It's a game of rugby FFS.

Mr 3, the British Army opened fire on the terraces because elsewhere the previous night there had been some British Policemen killed. These people were entirely innocent.

Who's Mr 3? What about all the shit the IRA did to the English over the years? I don't see the relevance. Learn from the past and move on. All killing and all war is wrong!

I am I'm me.

Of course people are entitle to express their opinions but I tend to disagree with most of yours as do many others and I am rather tactfully expressing my opinion that I wish you would either welcome to the board or make your posts more adult.....

now shut up bryan ferry on the tele

I spent 18 months fighting the IRA at close quarters and I fail to see the relevance of the events of 1969 +. This happened way back in 1920 and the Black & Tans opened up on entirely innocent men, women and children. It is an entrely shameful episode in our history.

Regrettably if the English/British, whatever we are this week, had to stay away from everywhere they've committed an atrocity of one kind or another we'd only ever play in selected parts of the Arctic and Hemel Hempstead. I believe today will be mould breaking and although very sensitive at first it'll finally lay some ghosts whether or not the ghosts were created by fair means or foul. There's nothing much this generation can do to right the wrongs of previous ones apart from acknowledge them and ensure that such events never take place again.

However with the aggressive foreign policy we are adopting with the Blair/Bush axis my fear is that there'll be another dozen Croke Parks in the middle east where we'll be forever vilified. America will always need an enemy and when there isn't one it'll invent one or create one. We're being sucked into that mindset.

Bad things happen in wars, but eventually you have to move on and about time too. Let's be honest, if the Germans took the same attitude as the Irish we'd not be playing them for centuries to come. The liking of some Irish people to dwell in the past and base their futures upon it has been one of their weak points ...thank God the new generation are moving on.

It's true that both us and they Irish need to move on but we persecuted that country going back to Oliver Cromwell so its a little easier for us to move on. By the way, I never said we shouldn't play there I said I was suprised that we were.

I was waiting for someone to mention the black-and-tans. They were an undisciplined force of unemployed, even desperate, ex-soldiers who had re-enlisted. Undisciplined is the word. It wasn't a general who ordered them to shoot spectators. It was more like gang warfare.

In retaliation for the murder of fourteen undercover detectives by the IRA, the Black and Tans opened fire on the crowd, killing twelve people. In retaliation for this attack, eighteen members of the ‘Auxies’ (a separate part of the Black and Tans) were killed in Kilmichael, County Cork. The ‘Auxies’ took their revenge for this by burning down the centre of Cork and parading around after this event with burnt cork in their caps. Violence, it appeared, only led to even more violence on both sides.

yes it's shit that such things happen, no matter which side is the perpetrator, and there were two sides in this case

but that was kids' playground stuff compared with what happend elsewhere just 18 months earlier involving the same
british army against people who had shown no violence at all http://www.amritsar.com/Jallian%20Wala%20Bagh.shtml
