There's an article on the BBC site about trips by US Presidents to the UK and other towns they visited.

They're wondering where Obama might visit on his trip in May.

Woodrow Wilson visited Carlisle in 1918 and I still remember when George W Bush visited Sedgefield in 2003.

Jimmy Carter apparantly made a trip to Newcastle in 1977 whilst President and shouted "Ha'way the lads!" in an attempt to bond with the locals.

I didn't know that.

And also George Washington's family were originally from Washington, Tyne and Wear.

So technically, George Washington was a Mackem!

Is that why the sign says "welcome to the original Washington"?

And Groover Cleveland was the first soul boy from Billingham to be President of the USA, parts of Durham and North Yorkshire were renamed in his honour.

Tumbleweeds, the wind whistling and moaning, dust blowing, the mocking gulls, a Marie Celeste of a topic and the worst of all being the utter, soull destroying loss of the will to live.
