Does anyone have one as their daily run about?
Thinking about getting one, suggestions or advise gratefully received.

If you mean old VW ones I've had a couple and I'm a bit of an obsessive about them so I could help out with any questions you've got and even recommend a couple of places to get one. Modern ones, I haven't got a clue though.

I've got a Toyota townace, it basically an 8 seater which some of the seats convert into a double bed. Also have a stove, heater etc which I take with me when off on one of my jaunts.
Did the top of Scotland last year in it and it was great.
Only cost me £500 and had 6 or 7 trips in it last summer.
VW are fantastic but ur talking mega bucks and considering the use you might get out of it is it worth spending thousands if ur not going to use it much.

Look for a Mazda Bongo (or Ford Freda) they are fairly cheap to buy, easy to drive and you can get them with pop up tops and loads of camper bits inside.

The VWs are great but don't like being treat like a modern car.

You could always just buy a transit and fit loads of camper bits like a mate of mine has, ended up costing him about half what a decent VW would have and he has a reliable van with a nice big bed.

Fair points on the old VWs but there are two things I'd argue very strongly. If you change the oil regularly the air-cooled engines are excellent, most of the breakdowns are caused by electrics and if you put an electronic ignition and a new battery on you're generally fine. Loads of people drive about without changing the points as if they're in a new car that only needs a service every 15,000 miles.

The other thing is price, they aren't really expensive unless you go for a splitscreen and they are terrible to drive on modern roads. As long as you avoid buying a rotted out wreck and you maintain it properly you'll get back pretty much what you paid for it when you sell. My last van was a 1972 Danbury conversion. I used it as my daily driver for two years, then did a year flogging it round France and didn't look after the bodywork properly during that year. I spent about £400 on maintainance and sold it for about £500 less than I bought it for. If you compare that to the depreciation and garage bills on a modern one I reckon the VW comes out on top. If you do your homework and shop around you should be able to get a decent van for £5,000 or a really good one for£8,000.

Having said that, I have thought seriously about a Mazda Bongo. They look horrible but you can get reliable, rust free Japanese imports very cheap. They don't look like this though....

Many thanks, had seen Bongo's and thought they looked decent.
Other option was do up a Transit...
