As has been said up your broadband width or pay for two seperate internet connections.

No other way round it, unfortunately

It might be how you are connecting to the internet?

1. Is your laptop connecting to the internet(or more precisely your router) via wifi ?
2. Is your son's PS3 connecting to the internet via wifi ?

If you are both using wifi and your laptop is closer to the router than his PS3 and your connection speed isn't great, then chances are you are taking up a chunk of his bandwith when you turn on the laptop.

I had this problem and to get round it I used a network cable to the router, rather than wifi for the PS3. This means the PS3 will get a faster connection to the internet. Might help.

Like has been said above, upgrade your internet speed.
That's the only way around it. The PS3 takes up a massive amount of bandwith when playing games online in comparison to just surfing the net on a computer.
I don't think the advise above about using the ethernet cable for the PS3 will help as as long as you have the computer on a certain amount of bandwith will still be allocated to the computer therefor slowing the PS3 connection down.
