...speaking generally do they treat it differently to men? The reason I say this, is because I was sorting out some old L.P's and amongst them was a Faces album of the wifes from her schooldays and when I showed her it, she got all sentimental, but she couldn't remember a single trac,k when I for some reason could recall all the words of a track called 'You're so rude'.... This lead me to think, do men listen to music purely for the music, for example me sat in the bedroom with my headphones on and a selection of albums concentrating on the solely listening to the music ..... whereas as a lot of women treat it as a background accessory much the same as clothes ..... again this is a generalisation but I have yet to meet one who doesn't conform to this.

Well, you have now,lad.
I hate having music on when I'm doing/concentrating on something else. Also, I bet there aren't many of my favourite songs from however far back that I don't remember most of the words to.

"Mind it must be hard for her living with a character from a Nick Hornby book."

Ah yes Mr ECG the old HiFi novel. Something else the bloody Americans got hold of and ruined I mean Chicago for god's sake. It could have been a cinema classic. Anyway top 5 cover versions?

If that's a serious question, then here's mine:
The Stranglers - Walk on by (I also loved the video with George Melly playing the lead role)
The Fall - Why are people grudgeful
Motorhead - Motorhead (the original version was by Hawkwind)
The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain - Smells like teen spirit
Camera Obscura - Sugartown

Yes and No....(and "Your So Rude" IS a great Faces song!!!).

My Mrs was probably as into music as I was when we were younger, she was certainly at as many gigs as I was from being about 16 and because she's a few years older than me had seen a lot of the bigger/better bands before me (Thin Lizzy, The Clash, even U2).

However since the kids came along she's a bit "wifey" and puts tripe like Paulo whatsisname, James Morrison and Razorlight on in the background.
.although when I bought her the Thin Lizzy box-set and the London Calling re-masters they were on non-stop for weeks.

Odd times she'll select a few singles on the jukebox but it's mostly the same 4 or 5 songs..Linda Ronstadt, some Supremes, maybe a bit of Northern Soul (re-living The Gemini!).

Mind it must be hard for her living with a character from a Nick Hornby book..

I started off by quoting the Faces 'Nods as good as a wink' album and now have the benfit of the CD to play in the car, but that album was, to me. so raw and exciting when I first heard it. So aint it funny how a group of musicians go from that to ..... pompous and lazy 'superstars'

Has anyone ever noticed the TERRIBLE bass-line/playing on Maggie May? You listen, it's got more drop-ins than South Bank, more mistakes than Darlington's defence and more blobs than in the machine in the Woodcutter bogs.

I always thought there was something wrong with that 'classic', but not being a musician didn't know what it was. The 'B' side is better, thanks in part to Lindisfarne's Ray Jackson.

The thing about The Faces was they always sounded to me as if it was all going to collapse around their ears at any moment! They had that great "Tight But Loose" feel which appeals to me (same reason I like The Fall, and why Orange Juice's first album is my favourite of all-time).

If Rod had stayed with The Faces, we would probably be looking at him in an entirely different light nowadays, a bit more Roger Daltrey and a bit less Tom Jones!

Yes, the bass is appalling but at the same time it's awfulness is what makes it and gives it that Faces raw but vibrant stamp which by then was starting to be 'ironed' out of their end product sadly. As for Rod.... he lost a lot of credibilty in my eyes but made lots of lovely dosh when he was called to LA.... even now he still has the 'talent', but to make albums of 40's romantic classics for the 'Women of a certain age' market signals his descent into Cliffendom.... I suppose it pays the bills and keeps the kids in new Ferraris though
