Just been watching news and Hartlepool was bombed on this day in 1940 so had quick search found this........

It is 27th August 1940 and you are standing in Brenda Road, West Hartlepool. Since June the town has been under repeated attack by enemy aircraft. Night after night the warning sirens sound and everyone has to go to the air raid shelters. Sometimes it is a false alarm and nothing happens, but other times you can hear the bombs dropping. Last night they dropped on these houses. Hartlepool suffered air raids from June 1940 until March 1943, and seventy men, women and children were killed during this time. The period between July and October 1940 was the worst. During these months there were a total of 147 warnings, often several a night, lasting for hours.

I lived in Brenda Road until i was 7 (close to Thompsons shop), in the late sixties. Don't remember the houses looking as nice as that though. Saved the picture. Thanks Bob.

I wander how many Hartlepudlians died in the forces over the same period.
I once heard that more Londoners died in the Blitz than fighting the foe, I dont know if its true.
