I felt that moment summed up perfectly whats wrong with football in our country.

The Premiershit is a marketing exercise selling football, labelled as a desirable product to football consumers, i.e. the gullible and the wannabe's. The original fans of the old first division clubs are no longer needed unless they can stump up the cash to be part of the 'elite' ...the people who matter are those with the cash to join them, you don't have to actually go to the matches, just be part of the marketing exercise, the shirt, the TV subscription, the duvet and owt else they can flog you. In return they offer you 'membership of their exclusive club and give you something 'successful' to be part of. So some rarf buys a shirt and struts about as part of the Geordie nation and identifies themselves as also successful by association ...and here's the funny part, Newcastle encapsulate the mirage of the premiership nicely ... a couple of entertaining seasons, won nowt, never won owt for over fifty years, yet still followed by fans convinced that the Del Boy mantra of 'this time next year...' applies to them.
It's all about selling an image, untroubled by the fact there's nothing to give the image any substance or validity, but when did that ever bother the wannabe 'consumer'... 'perceived success' is apparently just as valid as the real thing in the crazy world of football.
