I'm thinking of buying the missus a 1996 MGF 2 seater for work, it's advertised stating it's only done 48,000 miles but has no service history.
The AA charge £20 for a check which is pretty reasonable but I need to check if the mileage is correct.
Are there any other sites or ways I can check just by using the registration number??

You can pay for an HPI Check that will prove the mileage, or http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/j ... equest.jsp

How much are you paying for it?

By the way, if it hasn't had the cylinder head gasket replaced then walk away unless you want a £500 bill within the next 12 months.

Its selling for £1100. I won the bidding on ebay but only bid on the statement that it had only done 48,000 miles.
However, the chap has said he only bought the car this year, put a new cylinder head gasket on it and a few other bits and is now selling.
I'm suspicous especially seeing as he only has the 1 test certificate!!!

Even if it has been replaced, someone doing half a job can make them worse.

For a P reg you're already well above CAP clean value and heading towards a retail price. It should be immaculate at this money.

They are worth F.A divided by four

I'd rather buy a French at TBH

They are not. Once the head gasket has been replaced by the Land Rover upgrade they are a decent, reliable and fun little car. not to mention a whole lot cheaper than the Mazda or Z3 alternative. Good on fuel too, 35-40mpg is perfectly normal.

Their bad reputation is purely down to the K series engine head gasket failures. They don't have any other issues.

What Mr I Said.........

Just make sure the cap on the header tank holds pressure too, cos that's one of the reasons the head gasket fails in the first place!

There are some companies that provide some guides and statistic for those used cars for buying and selling purposes. You just need to search on the net for some examples.
