Yep,I watched it.
Phil Taylor is without doubt the best sportsman ever.
Won his first world title in 1990,has dominated the sport ever since & is still getting better.
No other sportsman has been the worlds best for 20 years.

If he played a proper sport like football or cricket then your argument might hold some substance.

Taylor is awesome and two 9 darters in the same game, a final too, pretty special.

I was at the Premier League Darts in Aberdeen a few weeks ago, saw Barney do a 8 darter. The roof almost came off the exhibition centre when he hit the double - magic clappp

They don't even play the game properly, starting with a double, as well as ending with one!

Couldn't agree more....it's a pub pastime, not a sport...I can think of no sport on this planet, sumo wrestling apart where the contestants look like they've had a water bed forced down their stretch fit trousers. What next, the Olympics along with 'Premiership crib' and ' Championship dominoes' ... Sport...? rolfl

Oh silly me,I thought working 8 hours a day towards perfecting your game & then performing at a very high level for long periods of time regularly (A world final can be up to 3 hours) made you a sportsman.
Obviously Phil Taylor should stop being a drunken bum & act more like John Terry or Warren Barton & the rest of our nations footballers.

Agreed, I'm sick of them amount of times Warren Barton embarrasses himself in the national newspapers these days....

I didnt say I could he is brilliant in his field, but your point is daft and like me saying I could wallop a blind man at pool. I am on about others in his field that are at the top of their game, e.g. Andy Fordam, who cant even remember winning the BDO world champ because he was hammered.

I'm sure footballers once had drinks before games. And at half time

And its not Taylors fault he's a class above the rest

Whatever anyone thinks about it being a sport or not, the fact Taylor has ruled the game for about 20 years and still seems to be improving is nothing short of spectacular.

OED definition is as follows;

An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.

Well its certainly an activity.
Physical exertion is very debatable and relative.
An individual or team competes against another or others is beyond question.

What is indisputable is that Phil Taylor is, by a huge margin, the best there has ever been in his chosen discipline. I can't think of anything else where one person is or has been so far ahead of the rest.

Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus are the only ones close but these are miles away from what Talyor has achieved over 20 years

clappp clappp

Well said, he's a model professional, i don't ever recall him shagging his mates bird or snorting coke or beating anybody up.
Although i'm not a big darts fan I think he's earned the rewards and accolades his commitment has produced.

Michael Schumacher fits into that category too but again, nowhere near as dominant.

the way the standard of darts is improving, it won't be long before someone does do an 8 dart finish though.

Darts is not a sport. it's a technique for throwing small metal darts at a board, a repetetive activity in the same league as bricklaying, except bricklaying actually involves physical exertion and there's something useful at the end.

So how often has a 155 break been done then?

I'll answer my own question, never in competition, possibly once in practice!!

"Breaks exceeding 147

At least eight breaks in excess of 147 have been recorded.

1. A 151 is reported to have been compiled by Wally West against Butch Rogers in West London's Hounslow Luciana snooker club during a club match in 1976. After Rogers fouled, Wally took the green as his free ball followed by the brown. He then took 14 red and niggers and a pink off the last red. He then cleared up to make the 151.
2. In April 1988 Steve Duggan made a 148 in a practice frame against Mark Rowing in Doncaster.
3. In 1993 Stephen Hendry made a 148 in a practice match against Alfie Burden.
4. In 1995 Tony Drago made a 149 in practice against Nick Manning in West Norwood, London in 1995, that was recorded by the Guinness Book of Records as the highest in this category. In that match Drago nominated the brown as the free ball, to score one point. He then potted the brown again, for four more points, before potting 13 reds and 13 niggers, a red and a pink, a red and a blue, then all the colours.
5. In 1997 Eddie Manning achieved a 149 in a practice match against Kam Pandya at Willie Thorne's in Leicester. Like Drago he took brown, brown, 13 niggers, pink and blue.
6. In April 2003 Jamie Cope made a 151 break at The Reardon Snooker Club during a practice game with David Fomm-Ward. After a foul by his opponent, Cope was snookered behind the brown ball. He took the brown as the free ball and then potted blue, 13 reds with niggers and two with pinks, then the six colours.
7. In October 2004, during qualifying for the UK Championship, Jamie Burnett achieved a 148 against Leo Fernandez, becoming the first player to achieve a break of more than 147 in professional competition. He took the brown as the free ball and then potted the brown again, followed by the 15 reds with 12 niggers, two pinks and a blue, then the six colours.
8. Jamie Cope was reported to have made a break of 155 in a practice frame in 2005."

My main point was meant to be that you can never have a 8 darter 501 game, unless there is a way of getting more than 60 with each dart. :uhoh:

Aye, as in the Schrodinger's cat experiment, some physicists would say if you can't see which of two sections the arrow's in, you have to count them both. The only way I'd ever win a dart's match.
