My ex girlfirends mam and her family grew up in Joburg, her grand mother had been car-jacked about 4 times and her friend was shot and killed outside his house. She said the crime is awful and that its a scary place to go around at night, its ok during the day.

Rapes:
According to a survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations, South Africa was ranked first for rapes per capita.
One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.

Officials are warning that tens of thousands of sex workers could enter South Africa during this year’s World Cup, and that children are at risk of being targeted by the sex trade.

World Cup organizers say up to 40,000 prostitutes were recruited for this year’s event, which takes place in a country where 16 percent of the population is believed to be living with HIV.

Officials also raised the possibility that local children would be recruited into the prostitution business partly due to the fact that World Cup takes place during a four week national school holiday.

The concerns were raised at a meeting of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Davis Bayever, South Africa’s deputy chair of the country’s Central Drug Authority, said his government feared the large influx of sex workers and pledged an attempt to stem the tide.

"It's horrific and very concerning," Bayever said. "Money talks, and if you're a sex worker then there is going to be money in South Africa in 2010."

Bayever said that passport checks, screening, and profiling will take place at the borders to try and prevent illegal arrivals. He believes the women will be traveling from all over the world, especially Eastern Europe.

Especially troubling was the prospect that impoverished children would be lured into sex work by the country’s sordid drug and prostitution underworld.

"There is no doubt that they will be targeted to become prostitutes," Bayever said. "Children from poor rural families will be given a carrot by criminals who tell them they will have a job if they come to the big city."

Around 450,000 fans are expected to travel to South Africa to attend this year’s World Cup.

I've worked with a few people who've lived out there and it doesn't sound very nice.

My cousin is married to a South African, and he keeps wanting to move her and the kids back there with him.

They've lived on the Fens for the last couple of years, which must have gone downhill recently if he thinks South Africa is any better.

Also all that stuff about Eugene Terre'Blanche, the leader of the white supremacist Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), being murdered is going to kick up a potential race row and riots there.

It's a hell of a lot more than 16%.

Nah, it's OK. Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela said so. My parents lived there for eight years and eventually gave up. Pays to shop where you belong.

South Africa is OK to live in if you are rich. If your poor or black you are screwed.

Our lass is mates with a SA lass and she has just moved back to SA to get married, her family and his family are loaded so its pretty 'safe' for then.

The gang culture in SA is mad. The whole politics in the country is messed up.

A lad I worked with said "they are starting to get the scum of the streets". I asked what he meant and he said "ticketless black people"...... refred refred refred refred

Allegedly there will be a permitter for the black people to stay outside of unless they have a ticket.

FYI -THIS IS NOT ME BEING RACIST IN ANY WAY.

Ive been over for our lasses sisters wedding and apart from nearly drowning and putting a hole in the petrol tank of our car after driving about 8 hours to go to Rorkes Drift and not getting there and been really scared, and thinking one night that we were going to be car jacked and if it wasnt for my lightning reactions of putting my foot down and ducking i think we would have, apart from that i thought it was a lovely place.

Did i forget to mention that the mother in law was shot while we where there
