I can only get this down to 19 mintues, so thought would ask people on here:

Four members of a band are walking to a night concert. They decide to take a shortcut, but must cross a bridge. Luckily they have one flashlight. Because of the varying size of their instruments, it takes each member a different amount of time to cross the bridge - it takes the first person one minute, the second person two minutes, the third person five minutes and the fourth person ten minutes. They must cross the bridge in pairs, travelling at the slower speed so if the one minute person went with the ten minute person, it would take a total of ten minutes. Since there is only one flashlight, one person must come back across the bridge, then another pair can cross.

They only have 17 minutes to cross the bridge and still get to the concert on time. What order should they cross to get everyone across and get to the concert?

I don't like this one. First off, the story isn't believable...why should you need a light to cross a bridge and why can't they all cross the bridge at once? We need to be told.
Secondly, even if you accept the story as it is, there's not enough information. The person who returns to the other side with the light, will naturally leave his instrument with his partner, instead of carting it back and forth. Therefore he can nip back quicker than he came. No times-without-instruments are given for this, however.
All highly unsatisfactory, in my view.

Maybe the torch is attached to the instrument of the slowest person on the bridge with the aid of gremlins/nanobots?

Just a minute, Yloop, about your first solution......if 1 goes with 2 and then comes back, that's 4 minutes. Then you haven't counted 1 in again, later. Your solution is in fact 19 minutes, like Compo's.

1 went back at the beginning then went again at the end

I'm sure it's right but as you said, what a stupid situation!

Why didn't they get the gremlins to carry the kit?

Edit: and 1 going with 2 and coming back is 3 minutes

If 1 of them is Boydy, it'll take him 3 minutes to get back with a 30 second break at each end for a pie, but he will have reacted very quickly seeing what should happen and he has very quick feet (all be it under a slow body) so that should save a quarter of a second.

If 1 of them is Monkey, he may or may not have turned up, saving 1 journey but making the band sound below par, and if he was there would probably get into an argument throwing someone of the bridge thus saving valuable time or been thrown off wasting valuable time.

If 1 of the band is Jones, he may also have not bothered coming or indeed may not bother playing once across the bridge at the venue.

If Joel was in the band, he las left and is now playing for "the men down under" who had a tour bus untill recently.

Of course Brian Honour would have run backwards and forwards over the bridge with each band member and their instruments on his back for 90 minutes and injury time making him late.

Billy Horner would ride in style in his Datsun to the nearest fly over being on time but on his own.

Gordon Watson would take the bus.

David Foley, Craig Midgely, Joe Gamble and Paul Cross could all fit over a little bridge at the same time but not carry big instruments so would be on time but playing Kazoo's.

So 1 minute but I wouldnt pay to see them play!

First, the one minute person and the two minute person must cross the bridge, for a total of two minutes. Then the one minute person should come back with flashlight - total of three minutes. The five minute person and the ten minute person cross together next, making the total thirteen minutes. Now the two minute person goes back and (total now fifteen minutes) and gets the one minute person and they cross together bringing the total to seventeen minutes.
