They 'supposedly' check little things to make sure you've filled in things right.

I paid this charge when i got one back in 2006, she looked over it and said yes thats fine, i said right, i want my £7 quid back, i could have done that, i complained to the manager and got it back.

Don't pay it, they do fuck all you can't do yourself by reading the manual you get with it and filling it in with that next to you.

I have no intention of paying it,Ive had 2 passports, the missus has had 2,the daughter 2 & the son 1.
Thats 7 I have applied for in the past & no problems at all, this 'checking fee' is just another tax on the stupid.

I fell for it, i was 21 and going abroad in about 2 weeks time, i needed my passport sorting and sorting fast.

The daft thing was she failed to spot that due to my parents being divorced and now having different surnames i needed to send a few bits of extra proof to back this up, her new marriage licence etc etc

She even paying the dosh doesnt even get it sorted fully.

You can fill in the form on line which makes sure that everything gets filled in in the right place. They then send the form to you to sign and include your photo and post back. Save yourself eight quid.
