anti virus recommendations please

AVG wont update on my pc cos it says my pc is too old/sh'ite...so no point persisting with it.

any other good programs I can get for free that'll do the same job?
I know I can google it, but I trust your opinions :uhoh:

ah but, whenever I've ever tried to update windows it says enter your serial no or summat and I dont have one!
so windows basically hasn't been updated on my PC for about 6 years!!

tried to download/update avg.......hit a wall
