Tesco regularly spread rumours that bananas cure cramp, then put bananas on offer.

All marketing techniques mutters.

No, it's true...because cramp is often caused by deficiency in potassium salts, wot you get in bananas.

I disagree, so had quick look here's some information I found, they also reckon a hot shower before bed or when the cramp takes place can help, as hot as you can take.

Anything rich in potassium can help out with cramps. That's why track runners and other sports players can be seen eating bananas before or after games. They can alieviate or even prevent cramps. Bananas are a good source of folic acid as well as phosphorus, both which help with muscle contractions.

Electrolyte drinks such as Pedialyte can replenish the potassium.

Found this about Cramp whilst I'm in bed....

Nocturnal leg cramps are involuntary muscle contractions that occur in the calves, soles of the feet, or other muscles in the body during the night or (less commonly) while resting. Only a few fibers of a muscle may be activated. The duration of nocturnal leg cramps is highly variable with cramps sometimes only lasting a few seconds and other times several minutes. Soreness in the muscles may remain for some time after the cramp ends. These cramps are erroneously believed to be more common in older people but may happen to anyone. They can happen quite frequently in teenagers and in some people while they are exercising at night. Nocturnal leg cramps can be very painful, especially if the person is dehydrated. Usually, putting some pressure on the affected leg by walking some distance will make the cramp go away.
The precise cause of these cramps is unclear. Potential contributing factors are believed to include dehydration, low levels of certain minerals (magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium), and the reduced blood flow through the muscles attendant in prolonged sitting or lying down. Less common causes include more serious conditions or the use of drugs.

Nocturnal leg cramps may sometimes be relieved by stretching the affected leg and pointing the toes upward. Quickly standing up and walking a few steps may also shorten the duration of a cramp.
Nocturnal leg cramps (almost exclusively calf cramps) are considered to be 'normal' during the late stages of pregnancy. They can, however, vary in intensity from mild to incredibly painful.

No, because table salt is a different sort of salt (sodium) which dehydrates you and is therefore more likely to cause cramp. It's virtually impossible to be deficient in sodium, anyway, and if you add it to food, your intake is likely to be too high for health.

This is nothing to the dangers of drinking Salty water, however......... bbolt

Found this though....

"Cramps from lack of water and salt can be treated by drinking water and increasing salt intake, respectively.

There is no scientific evidence to support the widely held claim by the sports-nutrition industry that the intake of specially composed electrolyte drinks has any advantage over intake of plain table salt (via drink or food) and water to counter these electrolyte disturbances and muscle cramps in people with a well-functioning renal system."

I only get cramp when been on the beer but found a brilliant way of stopping this and a hangover. Beofre you go to bed get a pint of water put two spoon fulls of sugar in it as well as a couple of shakes of salt, then just neck it (if you can without tasteing it) its horrible but you will never have cramp again or a hang over

Aye, well. Confusion reigns!
The thing about table salt was what I was taught when I worked in the trade, but I've no scientific evidence to support it. Except...except that it is true that it's nearly unheard of for anyone to be deficient in table salt/sodium, so that it looks pretty unlikely that this would be a cause a common condition like cramp. I put my faith in bananas!

Yes.... bananas. I got cramps and started eating bananas and it was like taking medicine...they cured the cramp overnight. Bananas have a lot of energy and minerals available in a form that is easily available to your body. Thats why you see tennis players eating them between games for instance.

Dear Mr Tesco,
I suffer terribly with nocturnal emssions. Would eating a banana, or the strategic positioning of said fruit, ease my dilemma?

We could have eradicated cramp altogether in Hartlepool if the Mayor had kept his word.
