PostPosted: Sun Dec 20, 2009 1:01 am
Here's an e-mail I've just sent to Wychwood Brewery....

Hello.

I've just poured a bottle of Hobgoblin Legendary Ruby Beer into a glass.
I bought 3 bottles today from Tesco Extra, Hartlepool.
When I'd poured nearly all the bottle....7/8ths....a dead spider came out of the
bottle and settled on the top of the poured drink.

The best before info. is....

30 Nov.10 (9329 17.26)

The spider was not in the glass before I poured the drink....I swilled the glass
out which I do after every drink. This was my 2nd bottle in the same glass.

Please find enclosed photo's of the Hobgoblin Spider and reciept from Tesco
Extra.

Thank you, Doyley Rarf*. Hartlepool.

*That's my Maiden Name!!!! confised

I most surprised that you never utilised your pool lifeguarding skills to save the aforementioned spider.. Although I suppose its better to drown in beer than in a plug hole after you've been washed down it!

It's a modern art form, that needs to be practised.

By the way, I'm helping my sons eating their late night kebabs at the moment, washed down with a few bottles of Stella.

technically, his contract for the beer was with Tesco's and not the brewery so if Mutters was bothered about a refund then you would approach the shop. However there is a good opportunity for some compo if mutters was to approach the brewery with a threat to go to environmental health for goods which were not of the "nature, substance or quality demanded"

Im sure the Hpool Fail would have liked to have put the story on the front page instead of the usual shoplifter who escapes jail for the 500th time for stealing a tin of spam.

Here's the reply I got....

Mutley,

Thank you for contacting us. We have looked at the photos closely and it
is very unlikely that this spider has been in the bottle for the month
or so since bottling. It is obviously dry and is suspended by the thin
layer of foam.
It is far more likely to have originated from the immediate surroundings
rather than the beer itself.

I must say it does look very fresh, not how i thought a spider trapped in a bottle of lager for a month would look. There no chance at all it could have fell in?

Yes.

Reply with pretty much what you've said here, that he's calling you a liar and trying to get out of the fact that it was in the bottle. Then tell him that due to his flippant response you're going to contact Trading Standards (for all the use they usually are like) and maybe the HSE and let them decide if you're a liar after they've ripped his factory and bottling plant to bits.

arnt wychwood owned by marstons now, they used to do some brilliant guest ales in the pub I used to go into called the stocks in abingdon, as the brewery is in witney just down the road, but now they are taken over by a large company they never provide them for the pub. Loved fiddlers elbow, dogs bollocks and was another one for Halloween but forgotten it. Still love green goblin and the hobgoblin though

Sent this....

Hello.

I'm afraid to say that the Spider never came from the surroundings it came from
inside the bottle of beer. I swilled the glass out after I finished the first
bottle and there certainly wasn't a Spider in the glass after swilling it out.
I really don't understand what you mean when you say....'It is obviously dry and
is suspended by the thin layer of foam.'!
I'm fairly angry and disapointed with your response, especially as I really
enjoy your products.
I have no alternative but to go to Trading Standards/HSE and the local press.

Thank you, Mutley.

And got this reply....

Mutley,

Thank you for your reply,

I am sorry you are disappointed with my response, I am merely looking at
the evidence:

The photos you have sent show the spider clearly on top of the foam, if
this had come from the bottle it would have spent at least a month
immersed in the beer, it would have been pasteurized and shaken about
during transit - This would make the insect thoroughly wet. It would be
either suspended in the liquid, or floating in the beer / foam
interface, not floating on top of the foam.

This is why I am suggesting it is more likely to have come from a
different source to the bottle, eg. dropped down from above when you
were looking the other way ??

Please give me a call if you would like to discuss this further, if you
wish to refer this to trading standards that is of course entirely up to
you and we would welcome another opinion.

He sounds like he is an expert in spiders immersed in liquid. I wonder how he gets that experience? Probably from the numerous other similar cases sent in to him from disgruntled customers.

The spider in this picture is clearly an hallucination brought on by consuming narcotic substances. The only question is why Mutley hasn't see more of them.
