I like Ryan Giggs and am pleased for him that he's won. In a time where footballers are generally loathsome creatures, he is one that is admirable in every form.

Just because he doesn't come across as being 'Mr Personality' on the tele doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the award, I am confident he is a decent bloke.

Sorry but you are clueless. Obviously I'm coming on a board which isn't my teams and having a go, which I would expect wont go down very well, but you talk shite.

What has "Giggsy" done this year besides warm the bench for them? It's a absolute disgrace.

According to BBC:

Scum bench-warmer > F1 champion, triple jump champion, fitty heptathlete champion, world champion boxer, ashes winning captain, tennis champion, 14 yr old diving champion, amazing gymnast and cycing world champion!

That fact you say "Just because he doesn't come across as being 'Mr Personality' on the tele doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the award" Well no, when everybody else nominated has achieved more this year than him and most actually have a actual personality, you don't deserve the award. It makes a total mockery of the award, it's a disgrace.

Fuck off you prick, giggs is the only one of the manure team that deserves a mention for his efforts outside of football, he is a truly genuine character and the only reason you disagree with it is because your a sad leeds fuckwit!!!

I honestly can not believe people on this board defending Giggs winning this award. What was incorrect about my last post?

I fail to understand why Giggs was even nominated for the award. Manure didn't win the European cup last year did they, Wales didn'y qualify for the World Cup did they, Giggs wasn't top scorer in the Premiershit was he? He has had a long career in which he has consisently ducked playing for his country with phantom injuries.

After 20 years at Manure he desrves to be in the Manure hall of fame and might even be in line for a BBC lifetime achievement award - but Sports Personality of 2009 versus numerous World Champions - no way. It would have been more fitting if Richie Humphries had been nominated.

the award was voted for by the public, giggs got the most votes on the night, so it's not really a disgrace as the people who cared enough to vote wanted him to win

I was with you all the way up to the last sentance!!! The other people in the running were all near the top of there profession globally. Ryan Giggs is not even close. Seems a nice fella though!

The BBC need to do something to their voting system as Giggs won with just 150,000 votes

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_ ... 410840.stm

They made a mistake going head to head with x factor

Giggs has been at the top of his profession for 20 years now, has made the most amount of appearences anyone ever has for his club and in the premier league.

Is there a player out there with as many medals as him?

Anyone that thinks he should not be rewarded for this is clearly a mong with there head so far in the sand it's unreal.

he did enough to be in the top 10. Did you vote? I take it you and several thousand people with a similar opinion didnt bother voting and are now moaning about that said vote. Giggs was democratically voted sports personality of the year, therefore he deserves it.

Yes I did vote - for one of our world champions. Now perhaps you could answer the question what did Giggs do in 2009 to deserve the award? BBC Sports Personality of the Year has been one of the few iconic awards shows on tv with a history and pedigree that was devalued by last night's award even Giggs was embarassed to win it.

You can't be so naive as to think that this award, and others aswell, is purely voted on by everyone who thinks of what that person did in 09?

You may do yes, but more often than not there reputation and things they've done before gets taken into account.

So to sum up he did nothing special in 2009 but has been around for a long time - on that we can agree

ok then, certainly from what i have seen, in 2009, ryan giggs has performed as well and as consistently as in his peak, which some will say was 8 year ago. he has been outstanding.

In 2009 he broke 2 club records and became the most decorated player in man utds history.

He may not have been worthy of winning it in your opinion, but in the opinion of the voting majority, he was!

Hmm, change the voting system....

Where have I heard that before ?

According to the votes, looks like Giggs ran away with it.

Splod made an excellent point though about Sports Personality being a national institution.
