I drove past the wind turbines near Fishburn last week and some were turning, yet there was no wind and slightly misty. You don't suppose they are just a sham  and the cable is actually supplying power to turn them ... and the whole exercise is to have them as a constant reminder to save power, a very cunning plot. If i don't post again, I've had the knock on the door in the middle of the night from the eco poli..............................................................

They have a dual purpose - if its windy they produce leccy but if its foggy they turn them on to dispel the fog, as proven by the fact that it was only slightly misty - they obviously work as earlier that day there had been a right pea souper round the whole area.
Quite clever really!

Sometimes they dont turn when it is like a fookin hurricane out there.

So, if thats the case, what electrical or mechanical device is stopping them turning in the wind?

I dont suppose many have realised yet that wind trubines are almost pointless. Unless there are about a million of them all working at once.

Yet one little nuclear powere station................. bbolt

What's up with nuclear...? We can store the nuclear waste in Sussex's mouth, easy innit?

Wind turbines only start to produce any electricity at a wind speed of about 4 m/sec (9 mph) and produce full output above 12 m/s (27 mph) and then are locked out mechanically above 25 m/s (56 mph) to avoid structural damage. At very low wind speeds the blades may turn but no electricity is produced. So given that we have a target of 35% of electricity coming from renewables in 2020 and most of that will come from wind the question that is currently taxing the minds of the policy makers is how do we keep the lights on when we have the sort of conditions we have at the moment ie a high sitting across the UK with cold weather and no wind. The answer is to have lots of coal fired power stations siting in reserve - but we are going to close a lot of them in 2015 under EU legislation with most of the rest closing by 2023, again under EU legislation. So we are well and truly screwed.

The subsidy for renewables is currenly costing electricity customers £1000 million pounds a year - but as its on your leccy bill and not on your income tax you will never notice it.

A while ago there was a story in the nationals about a wind turbines blade going missing and then found a few miles away and stories of a ufo hitting it etc. They ever figure out what happened?

Do you mean this one

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstop ... rbine.html

The turbine blade just fell to the ground - they don't rotate fast enough to fly miles away.

Ahh right, at the time they were saying the blade was nowhere to be found and thought a ufo was flying about with the blade stuck in it
