My missus passed on a missive tonight and it was quite startling really. She said that if the hospital is allowed to close then there will be no more Hartlipudlians as babies will not be born in hartlepool anymore ( apart from home births).

Actually it quite shocked me.

if he was serious, he'd resign and cause a by election ...that would have the media flocking in and put the decision on a national platform. Remember when he took over from Mandelson....he only got a 2,000 majority, which in Hartlepool terms is scraping in.

Imagine a poolie pride councillor rising to be MP for Hartlepool....... and if you think that's fanciful just look where a certain Mr Wright came from......

Just to clear up a couple of things; the maternity unit in North Tess will now be consultant lead i.e. if there any problems during birth/pregnancy, you will have to travel to Stockton. There will still be a midwife lead maternity unit in Hartlepool so it is essential that it is top class so as many people as possible can be have their babies in Hartlepool.

This will be up until the hospitals close. The most likely site for a new hospital is Wynyard, on Hartlepool land, so we should still see many Hartlepudlians for years to come. Mind you, there is a piece of land at Wynyard where the boundaries of Hartlepool, Stockton and Sedgefield meet, so they may well build a new hospital there.

As I see it, a new hospital is a done deal. (it has taken them 13 years to come to this decision, I doubt they will change their minds now). Fighting to save the hospital is a lost cause and I would guess some of the "Save our Hospital" group may well contest the elections also.

It might be worth fighting for more community based services, a top quality maternity suite and especially better transport links between Hartlepool and North Tees.

The hospital trust is also going for foundation status so they can manage their own destiny. A new hospital will almost certainly be PFI, which has gloriously failed everywhere I know of.

Which kind of begs the question of why our illustrious MP is going along with the various campaigns and resigning his PPS job (other than to retain his seat of course). I really hate politicians.
