Who would you choose?

I rarely listen to TalkSport much because the standard of presenter is terrible, but last night I heard one of the most unintentionally funny bits of radio in ages. There was a show being co-presented by that giant of footballing knowledge Darren Gough. Now I'm paraphrasing a bit here, but it went something like this...

Lionel Messi? I don't see it, don't rate him. You watch him playing for Barcelona and you think "yeah, he's alright" but he's got great players around him. You think "he's pretty quick, got a bit of skill" but we have players like that in Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Then you see him playing for Argentina and he really doesn't stand out at all. He doesn't catch the eye or dominate at international level in the way that Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard do. And his goalscoring record at that level (quick check - 14 in 40 according to Wiki) is very ordinary, nowhere near as good as someone like Peter Crouch. I'm not saying he's a bad player, but at the very highest level there are many better players around.
