is there only me who thinks that while rowell undoubtably has the potential, he is nowhere near first team level yet. Some of his fancy flicks were bordering on pathetic last night. He would get murdered at league one level.

I was fortunate enough to miss last night's match so am not influenced by it except for reading the opinions on here.

So my starting line up for Friday would be;
GK Flinders
RB Austin
LB Hartley
CB Liddle
CB Collins
RM Brown
LM Monkhouse
CM Humphreys
CM Sweeney or Jones
CF Behan
CF Boyd

For me Friday's result is key. Win and it doesn't matter that we got knocked out of the Mickey Mouse cup by a lower league side. Lose or draw and it's four games without a win and time to start being a little concerned at the management.

saying that the word pathetic was probably a bit harsh

I think that is just about the strongest side we can put out on current form, given that Brown and Hartley are not injured. The jury is out for me though regarding Humps. I would be more comfortable with a Boland type and a proper left back.
The selection/non selection of Jones is shrouded in mystery at the moment. Where are all the people who are "in the know" hiding at?

I'm surprised that Turner hasn't tried a 3-5-2 yet seeing how fond of it he was last time he was in charge- we were actually talking about this the other week in the pub.

i wonder why he hasnt tried it? It 'should' prevent us being over run in midfield and make us play through midfield more.

Rowell has never been murdered before in the League One games he has featured in so don't see why that would suddenly start happening. I thought he was the brightest thing to come out of last night and I'd far sooner have him starting games than Humphreys in the middle but I know which one we're going to be seeing a lot more of unfortunately

i think part of the problem john is i have heard so many rave reviews of him, the twice i have seen him he has disappointed me. maybe with decent strikers in front of him would have helped i just remember him booting one ball out of play when he had time and space to run with it, and two fancy flicks for the sake of it. i can see him being a really frustrating player. Im not writing him off, i just think he has a long way to go.

Agreed with MJ that his only poor game was Scunny away but the whole team were dogshit that day. He has proven himself in tough circumstances like MK Dons away, Hereford away and even his cameo against Leicester in the same competition last season showed he has an abundance of talent. To criticise the lad for doing a couple of tricks when his all round game and his general distribution was very solid is extremely shortsighted. Cooper would be playing him every week and we'd be enjoying the benefits of him doing so.

I thought Rowell was just about the only bright spot of a depressing night.

At least he tried to make something happen and at least he actually looked like he wanted to be playing.People labelling aspects of a young lads game 'pathetic' for trying something is probably the reason more of our players go backwards and sideways and don't try to make something happen...

That's what I'm getting at; the two flicks in question (I assume we are talking about the same ones, and one in particular ten yards outside the box at the Rink End) meant that he got the ball to the next man quicker than would otherwise have been possible. I don't understand how that can be a source of criticism. I would prefer watching someone with the ability/confidence to do that, than watch someone who takes the time to bring the ball down and then look for the passing opportunity, which may well have gone. Had he messed it up and/or lost the ball I could understand it to some degree. But he did neither.

The day we start frowning on players for having and using skill is the day I should pack this football lark in and start watching a different sport.

The one he booted out of play was a poor pass. Christ, is he allowed any? He didn't play many.

you know when you say something then really wish you hadnt

all i meant and i will stick to it is he needs to learn when and where to do these flicks and skills. In my opinion he did things at the wrong times when there was a much easier option. That will come with experience, but based on what i have seen i think a loan spell is in order.

I wish we could loan him out MisterB but I don't think we can loan out such a promising centre midefielder when it's the area of the team we are struggling the most in. I don't think anyone who's played there this season is bad player we just can't seem to find the right blend, I wouldn't be gutted if he kept Rowell in the team on Friday.

I wouldnt say he would be a starter just yet but a few sub appearances this season will do him good.

I don't want him loaned out....I want him starting infront of the other midfield players who are performing sub standardly.

Why is it only at Hartlepool that players are never thrown in on the basis that if they're good enough, they're old enough.

But other club midfielders get a game based on reputation.

I didnt think he played THAT well last night, but he has something about him, and maybe a run in the team is what he needs now.

But like others have said, we have to get that midfield two right.

So, which two?

and that sir, is the million dollar question!

Traditionally you have a midfielder who pushes up and a midfielder who sits back.

I know the game has changed a lot but i still think at our level this is the best way forward.

So who do people think could fill role 1. The holding man... and role 2. The man pushing forward.

I'll have a go if I may.
In the last three games we have shipped seven goals, and it could have been more, especially at Exeter. On the other hand we have created bundles of chances that we haven't taken.
Having Ritchie and Sweeney or Ritchie and Rowell in centre midfield is not a good balance. Those combinations are great going forward but hopeless when it comes to defending. Especially when you have Monky and Brownie making up the four. Too many attackers and nobody doing the dirty work.
We need a destroyer in the holding role who can protect the back four, break up play and feed it to the flair/attacking players.
Apart from Boland we don't seem to have such a body at the club, so we need to loan one with a view of getting a permanent one in January.

What a strange thing to say. It probably is but that has nothing to do with the reason I don't want him playing for us.

The only positive I took from last night was Rowell's back heel, while on the floor after a tackle on the edge of the area, unfortunately it didn't produce anything. That and Boyd's shot which their keeper did really well to save. Newell was quoted as saying he thought it was a goal when he saw the shot struck. So two positives. sctatchinghead

willie boland is not on the pay role anymore, he recieves treatment/help from club physio/medical staff in his rehabilitation from injury, i dont imagine he will play for us again, which is a shame sadx I know Gary Liddle has did pretty well at centre half this season, but I really do believe he needs to be used in a central midfield role, although taking him out of the defence would leave a hole we cant fill at the moment sctatchinghead Not one bit convinced humps should be starting in midfield, i think this is a bad move from turner trying to convince us all that Ritchie is the answer in midfield stpid Freddo deserves his chance in some capacity other than a bench warmer, i would put him on the left and maybe monkhouse into humphries role in the centre. Jones and brown making up the four in the middle
