Did anybody see it last Thursday ?

I thought it was very embarassing for Ben Bradshaw to say that he hadn't read much about the Roman Polanski case...and then David Dimbleby said, "You're the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport!" confised

That's just politician speak for "My friends from Islington and I think that the wonderful film-maker Mr Polanski should be left alone to make his fine films cos the unwashed masses who want his balls cut-off for drugging and raping a 13yo girl don't understand you have to have these experiences to make great art."

It was like he was purposefully trying to act ignorant in order not to say anything inflammatory.

But, as David Starkey said, "The law's the law". If he's done something wrong, he's got to be punished and not protected because of his work.

Hang on a minute, can somebody explain why a British politician should give any more of a shite than I do about a Polish-French gadgie being arrested in Switzerland for a crime allegedly committed in the USA? Where do we come into this?

Roman Polanski is a very famous film director. The story was very highly publicised in the media. Ben Bradshaw is Secretary of State for Culture, of which World Cinema comes under. As Bradshaw said, it was more of a legal matter than a cultural one, but for a Government minister of his field not to have read up on a highly publicised story such as Polanski's made him look very embarassed on the programme. His counterpart in France gave an opinion - what politics is about - about the case even though it's a matter for the Swiss authorities etc, so when our minister was asked about, he really should have had an opinion in my view, even if it was "I agree with the decision".

Bull.

I'd rather our government concentrated on trying to limit the implications of the shyte state of affairs that they've dropped this country into.

I'm not asking them to treat this issue over the economy etc. All that would have been good was for Bradshaw to give an opinion as an MP, a politician and a government minister. But, he didn't...

Poolie of Kent, remove that smaller picture your looking at and look at the bigger picture.

Just because someone is secretary of state for culture and whatever all that bollox means doesnt mean he needs to know about every single film in the world.

Christ as long as he's doing his job in this country properly who cares.

You really don't help yourself at all.

That's true, but you can't really have their Culture minister willingly giving an opinion and our minister choosing to stay ignorant and say that he didn't read much about the case, even though it was in the newspapers, on the news etc.

I find that argument in particular very hard to believe.

Point 1: I think it would help if whatever somebody was minister of would have a decent knowledege about their field, or at least read up on it, as they might have to make important decisions on particular issues as a national poltician.

Point 2: He is, supposedly, a politician. In my opinion, politics is about people's opinions on issues. If he's not giving at least an opinion on the matter, which I doln't think he did, then I don't believe that where that issue is concerned, he is not doing enough, especially when he goes on a BBC television programme with people who do have opinions.

Politicians need to act on matters that affect us, not on matters that affect foreigners. If he MUST have an opinion of a French-Polish gadgie who didled in the States, should he also be clued up on Chinese music, Japanese theatre, Thai dancing, them funny drums they have in Ireland etc?
PoK, you talk a right old load of shite.

All I'm saying is that it would help having an extended knowledge of the issues they are confronted with. I'm not expecting them to know everything, but I don't think he had an excuse because it was all over the media.
