I was shown Goodbye Lenin and Run Lola Run in my A Level German class. They are both excellent films, as well as The Edukators which makes you think differently about how greedy the world can be.

The Edukators was shown on BBC Two at the same time as the credit crunch started, so the final words of the film were poignant and still poignant today:

Die fetten Jahren sind vorbei!

Roughly translated, it means: the days of plenty are over!

The French films that I saw at school were Amelie, Les Choristes and a little bit of Jean de Florette / Manon des Sources, which has the famous Stella Artois tv advert theme (also a piece by Verdi).

I've also bought La Rose En Vie on DVD and I want to get L'auberge espagnole and the sequel Russian Dolls. (which stars a young Kevin Bishop from the Kevin Bishop Show and Muppet Treasure Island). He plays an English student called William on an exchange program.

Other very good German films are The Lives of Others and the Baader-Meinhof Complex.

Also worth a mention are 36 Quai des Orfevres, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Paris, Je T'aime and 1492: Conquest of Paradise, where the famous Vangelis theme comes from.
