A good thing or not??
Reading the thread about The Clash tribute act got me thinking about a few ive seen down the years.
As a HUGE fan of The Doors, i went to see "The Australian Doors" many times, who really were incredible.
On the other side of the coin, i remeber once seeing an Oasis tribute called "No Way Sis" (a clever play on words there, i think you'll agree!), who, to be fair, were bloody shocking!!

Seen various Madness cover bands, the pick of which would be an act who performed in "The Spot" a few times, but their name escapes me! , all i remeber is they were from Hull, and were a very polished act.
I suppose if they sound like the real thing and do justice to the original artists, then its ok...otherwise it all gets a bit silly! confised

On the subject of the Australian Doors and tribute bands, try to get hold of a copy of Dave Graney's, Morrison Floorshow, a comment on the Australian Doors!

A mate of mine in Nottingham has made a good living out of this - twice! He sings in two bands:

Oasisn't
Strolling Bones

Does quite well out of it.

seen the The Smyths at the Studio a couple of times and they always do a good show, capturing something of that Smiths essence. A good time was had by all.

I've been thinking about this for a while, but the acts I could do justice to as a tribute act probably wouldn't attract a big enough audience.

I sing like Glen Tilbrook from Squeeze, but don't look like him, and the same goes for Mr Costello, although I could lose 4 stone I suppose....

You could if you hadn't parked that bike up.

Ah but I haven't! I've just been biding my time, a new one arrives today, reduced from £390 to £149.99 in the sales. I was offered it as a Xmas pressy but turned it down 'cos I knew it would come down in price in January and it has!

12pm and it's mine!

Rubbish excuse! your purchase of a new trike did not bar you from pedalling your old one. Ha!

My old one was a pitiful excuse for a bike really, it was a decent enough make etc but was as old as some of the posters on here, probably older than Daniel Gaunt or Nick Harrison!!

It had got to the point where I didn't dare ride too far out of H'pool.

You watch me go now!

i'm actaully 23 now, I don't look it, like

Interstellar Overcoat are good (Pink Floyd). There are several Hawkwind tribute type bands, most of these have ex Hawkwind members in the band, the best being Space Ritual, Nik Turners band and features mostly original ex Hawkwind members. There's also a band called Silver Machine who are ok.

Chip, what about forming the following: The Field Voles, Trembling Blue Czars or Picture Gallery?

Oh I don't know, the present day Elvis wouldn't be a difficult impersonation.

Im not a great fan of tribute bands,I agree with Chip, its OK if you are doing a band thats long gone but why do a band thats on the go now.Im disappointed that The Studio are doing more & more tribute bands(The Clash tonight & Oasis tomorrow),but unfortunately tribute bands bring in the punters,it annoys me when good bands get 20 or 30 people but tributes get a full house.

The Clashed do the job pretty well & dont try to look like The Clash, they just enjoy playing the songs.

As much as I was never into The Smiths I must admit The Smyths really does look & sound like a Smiths gig.

The first tribute band I ever seen was at The Whitehouse in Peterlee in 1983 & they were a U2 tribute called Red Rocks !!!

Tribute bands of any description go against the grain for me. If you're in a covers band, fair cop like, we all like the classics and we all think we can have a fair stab at making them sound good, even maybe putting your own stamp on them. But to want to be a carbon copy of someone else and not demonstrate your musicianship in a unique manner, not writing owt and just trying to exactly regurgitate something smacks of trained monkeys to me.

And why oh why ANYONE would want to try and emulate T-Rex escapes me. They put the shit in shit. rage
