Anybody got any recommendations for a decent meal, Saturday night, potentially interested in something out of town, seem to have been to all the usual places in town.

Good call.

Alternatively try The Smiths Arms at Greatham, excellent.

Avoid the Raby Arms though, it's shyte, the service is shyte and it's run by shysters.

The smiths arms is indeed a lovely meal.

If you do go to hart, as ripper says avoid that stupid place, go to the white hart, lovely food there.

Get yourself there if you want salad in a plant pot and pizzas that have that thickness of a piece of paper.

Under The Grand?

I went there when it first opened, once with the wife (meal was ok, nowt special and overpriced for the quality) and again a couple of weeks later for my sis's birthday (large group of us, food no better than average, service poor). That's prob about a year and a half ago now like.

Enormous menu and elish food.

It is worth the drive. We went for my birthday and my mate ordered the crocodile steak! San Miguel on tap too!

If it's for something special and you want guaranteed oral for the next six months go no further than Seaham Hall and try the white room restaurant - menus are online - been twice now and the better half felt as if she was being treat like royalty.

Yes it is a bit pricey but if you are careful with your drinks then it doesn't come in too bad

2 best in town for me are farrahs and aldi arms

I've always found the Ship at High Hesledon to be good. If you like real ale they have 5 or 6 to choose from.

Try the 'Villa del Porto' in Sunderland. My mates brother owns it and it's a lot different to the usual fayre that you get in Italian restaurants. I went there last Friday and it was superb, best mussels that I've ever had. You're looking at around £8-9 for a pasta based main, £16-17 for steak. If you don't go tomorrow, I'd say it's well worth a trip in the future.

Bai Xen Ji at Sunshine 100. There's an underground car park for 5 yuan a night and their steamed prawn dumplings are fantastic.

There are a couple of nice places in Seaham on or next to the seafront. Mango (http://www.mangoseaham.co.uk/), Martino's (http://www.martinosgroup.com/) and Pandin (http://www.pandinthai.co.uk).

By the way, just to wrap this one up, we went to Chris Kamara's Chinese on the marina. It's been a few years since we went in there and I couldn't make my mind up so went for a safe option. Had the £22 set menu, cracking food, Chris had a couple of chats with us as well. Staff are excellent, places is spotless.

My only criticism is there's always a lot going on in there, reminds me of being in a restaurant on a cruise ship, live band, magician wandering around, loads of staff. It's not a place to go if you are wanting a quiet private meal. There's too much going on.

Good value for money, I had my traditional pre meal pint, the other half had a bottle of water, we then had a bottle of wine and the bill came to about £65. Can't argue with that.

8 out of 10.

ps. I've bookmarked this thread with the aim of working my way round some of the other excellent suggestions.

Lotus Garden is nice but over priced imo. They have a takeaway shop now whose prices are more realistic.

Also the staff dont get the tips you leave.

I went to the Toby Carvery the other night. Carvery dinner and a lovely ice cream for £6.50. Good value.

Although I immediatly tucked into a roast potato which must have just been cooked and lobbed a big bit in my mouth. Anyway it was scalding hot and burnt the roof of my mouth which then peeled off in one piece (seriously it was the whole of the roof of my mouth) I thought about spitting it out but I know it knocks me sick when i see other people do it.

Needless to say I didnt eat very much bar the ice cream as it was agony.

Not good eh Mr Tree?? Not long after I got here we went for lunchtime noodles. There was a big piece of Chinese cabbage leaf floating about and I went for it. Chopsticks and noodles is like a sort of bite/suck/bite action stylee and this red hot cabbage leaf went flying down my airway. Agony and choking at the same time, I thought I was an ex-Spender. sadx

Fortunately, everyone megs their food about here, so no-one paid any interest....
