It's about time that the Government finally did something useful and banned cars over ten years old from the roads.

Last night there was three of these chavtastic old bangers broken down blocking lanes of the A19 between Diddlesbrough and Billingham just cos it was a bit wet.

Time to enforce a compulsory scrapping age I reckon, and if the scruffs can't afford to buy anything newer then they can use the bus and at least it will reduce congestion on the roads.

What about these people who have the vintage cars which they have looked after and reconditioned them? Although this would also ensure the car trading industry would gain a massive boost in sales as people would need the newer cars. Bit harsh calling people scruffs becaus they cant afford newer cars.

banghead

My car is 23 years old and still going stong. Its never broke down on me yet (touch wood). I pay a fortune in tax for the priveledge of keeping it on the road. The cars that should be banned from the roads are the big friggin land rovers etc owned by some single business woman who feel 'powerful' and 'safe' as they drive a massive car which will kill the drivers of other cars once they carelessly plough into them from not being able to drive properly. Those who 'value' their cars and look after them have every right to own an old car instead of any of the mass produced eastern 'white goods' or french tat which get driven around these days.

Stick your shitty modern Renaults/ Fiats / Peugeots up your arse. A new one of these will break down more that a 'decent' old car anyway providing of course it is properly serviced.

And I could afford a modern car but they are so god damn dull! I would sooner have a bit of individuality rather than being a sheep and buying a 206 or a Focus.

Valid point well made. Maybe all Fords, Vauxhalls, French and Korean cars (and other similar trash) should be banned at five years old.

Maybe grant exceptions to the rules for German and Japanese motors due to them being of superior quality.

Go and hang?

Don't be so silly.

I quite clearly said that they could use the buses with the elderly and the smackheads.

Ive got a Vauxhall Astra 03 Reg never broke down yet. Ive seen a 08/09 Porsche broken down on the side of the road amongst others. Its not about the age its about how well looked after they are and about how you drive them. As for the big 4x4 cars I can see why people own them my dad owns one and its really comfortable for the long distance journeys.

LOL, what a minefield such a policy would be!

The MOT system is designed to ensure vehicles on the roads are safe and roadworthy however one fieta for example is different to the next. A lot depends on how they are maintained by the keeper/s.

There is too much variation between cars to apply an effective 'blanket' policy. You would hope that those people who own an older car which keeps breaking down would simply replace it once it became unecomical to maintain. Those which rarely break down should not be scrapped merely for being old.

I find the governments scrappage scheme really sad as cars these days are so dull (unless of course you can afford some £80k supercar but how many of us can). Cars that are a part of our heritage are being encouraged to be scrapped.

The majority of Korean/french shiit should not be imported into the UK at all. We could make better ourselves for the same sort of price (especially with the current value of the pound).

i have an 03 corsa and hate the thing with a passion but got it for nothing so i am putting up with it till February. Getting a c4 and dont really like them but buying it off my aunty it will be 3 and so far has done 5,000 miles she wants £6,000 for it so I would be a fool to miss out on it.

A C4?

A Citrot?

You'd be a fool not to miss out on it.

I was loaned Citroen Saxo by a local garage once, it was blowing off steam coming up the bank from the Spotted Cow car park and that's true.

Loads of short journeys is worse for a car than motorway miles.

It'll be a wreck.

cheers i want all the advise I can get so you would say that my £6k would be better spent elsewhere on another car, the thing is though how do you know what type of journeys a car has done. I know my aunty and she takes really good care of her car. I think looking around £6k is about the going rate so if I can get it for £5,500 then that would be ok.

They are fast but I know that when they first come out they were considered to be dangerous if driven recklessly. Apparently the brakes were not good enough to cope with the power. This may have been addressed for the more recent one however. Honest John is agreat website for car reviews.

A car owned by an elderly person is likely to have been used for lots of short journeys ie trips to the shops. If I was buying a a car privately I would simply ask the owner whether he commutes to work in it and how far away etc. He should be able to tell you how he can account for the milage since he bought the car.

Cheers Grave. I also got told when its wet they are a bit of a handful as well with the amount of power they have. Sounds like the power they have are a bit too much for the car shame as I really like the look of them.

I heard that too. If you are going to rag the arse off it then you may come a cropper. If you are planning to drive it more 'leisurely' then it will be fine. Although if this is the case then you may aswell get something less powerful. An older honda civic type r would do you better, the are bulletproof, reliable, fast and the economy is dependant on how you drive it. At low revs the engine is quite sedate but if you put your foot down into 'vtec' ie 6000rpm it becomes a rally car. You then get the best of both worlds depending upon what 'mood' you are in on a particular day. The speed will be there if you want it.

I used to have one. The gears are fantastic too. One like this would do you...

Nice cars although I did test drive a standard civic with the gear stick in the same place as this. I found it akward to get used to and also the milage on this is more than whats on mine at the minute.

Nowt wrong with old cars, my last one was 18year old and was the best car iv ever owned. Current car is 11 year old and sound as a pound. Id rather pay £3k/£4k for something a bit different and unique and with good looks than the recent crap being produced for £10k+. New cars look shite.

Nice cars although I did test drive a standard civic with the gear stick in the same place as this. I found it akward to get used to and also the milage on this is more than whats on mine at the minute.

The gear stick seems weird at first but after a while you wonder why all cars dont mount it there! It was awful switching back from a civic to a standard car

It's the Japs, mate. They make good cars and good PoW guards.

Sorry folks, I've just worked out how to use the free download of Paint.com. Does most things Photoshop will do but is free.

I've got a 1997 golf which has done 130k miles, and touchwood it's still going strong. I have to hire new cars/vans for work quite a lot and I can honestly say there are few of them that can hold a candle to mine. It's more economical on the juice than most of them - diesel Honda Civic for a start - and it just feels better built than most modern vehicles. I had a Pug last week and it was like driving a shopping trolley powered by a Scalextric motor.

Is your seat, erm, well worn in the scrotal sac area? Or have your man dangleys got their own seatbelt/safety harness?

I've been driving for almost 40 years, the newest car I've owned was about 5 years old, and the average age has probably been around 10+, but the biggest factor in their reliability over the years is the fact that most of them have been Japanese. The highest price I've ever paid for a car was around 4k, most have been much less than that. Even if I could afford to buy new, I doubt that I would, the dealers are having your eyes out with the prices they charge. If a car is bought, say at four year old, it has proved itself to be reliable, and isn't going to be a 'friday afternoon' or 'monday morning' production line disaster waiting to fall apart.

Based upon what?

And just cos it is reliable at four years old (see my original post) why does that mean it isn't a skip when it gets to ten?

The sooner we can get the skips off the road the better.
