Thought he was pretty poor today, although in all fairness they were a class above.

Flinders - 6 - Steady when needed, nothing flash
Hartley - 5 - got found out a bit at LB, they seemed to target him second half
Collins - 6 - looked a bit clumsy at times but did ok
Liddle - 6 - not a long term solution
Haslam - 5 - steady although at fault for first goal
McSweeney - 5 - pretty anonymous
Sweeney - 5 - forced good save and missed the big chance when put through
Friedriksen - 6 - some nice footwork but needs better distribution
Monkhouse - 6 - great commitment to get back for goal line clearance but didn't offer a lot going forward
Boyd - 5 - looked off the pace although we didn't create a lot for him
Behan - 7 - my MOM, put himself about and did what he could with limited service

Subs

Rowell - 6 - not a lot of time to contribute
Austin - 6 - at least he looked like a full back
Brown - 6 - didn't really get into the game

There is no shame in being beaten by a better team; Charlton were stronger, more disciplined and better in possession than we were. Far too often we looked for the long ball when a simple pass to feet would have been sufficient, especially as Llera was colossal in the air second half. Sweeney was virtually non-existent until the last 10 minutes and Monkhouse was shocking for the majority of the match. However, Behan was a class apart. Great first touch, strong and a nuisance up front, the bloke was by far and away our best player today.

I think signing a centre midfield player or either Jones/Rowell stepping up the plate and starting to fulfill their promise will make or break our season (preferably the signing to play alongside one of those two or Freddy) otherwise we have long balls coming straight back all year into a gap vacated by the two chasing the long balls.

Charlton were excellent in that department tho playing fast, sharp pass and move football

How anybody could pick Sweeney as MOM is beyond me . He was lightweight throughout and his constant flinging of arms and pointing at who needs to be picked up is continuously annoying . He was anonymous throughout and even fluffed our only chance second half . He has not developed as an attacking midfielder since our previous stint in this division and as such deserves to be binned . A posturing nobody in my opinion .

I absolutely agree with your analysis, the centre midfield is a crucial position and we still need it addressing, Sweeney should not be put in this position, we will struggle all season if he remains there.

Probably the same people that kept picking Humphreys last season.

Ah. Its Sweeney who is gonna get it this season from the terrace experts.

I bet Humphreys is relieved.

I thought all the players battled but the difference in class was huge. I felt like many others Charlton never got out of 2nd gear and if they did the win could have been a Norwich style defeat.
Sadly how can we compete with teams who get nearly 20,000 for a home game. Tuesdays game might tell a lot about how the season will pan out.

Maybe we just slightly underperformed?

Maybe it was just one game, after a good start to the season?

Maybe our players were slightly jaded after Wednesdays impreesive win?

Maybe being without Clark, Humphreys, Jones, and Larkin, when the players were tired didnt help?

Maybe Charlton are actually very very good?

Maybe we will get in the play offs?

Plymouth and QPR previously made us look very ordinary, and in both seasons we made the play offs.

Maybe we should all calm down, and give the team, the squad, the management a big and long chance?

Foook me I heard some wankers talking about relegation on the way out of the ground.

exactly, we wont come up against sides like Charlton every week. We just need to make sure that we pick up points against the more average sides.

the lad tries his heart out, but are you seriously suggesting he deserved man of the match yesterday ? sctatchinghead sctatchinghead

No. I was amazed he got it. But does he deserve the bollox he is receiving on this thread either? Maybe you could answer that with a simple yes or no.

Our three best peformers were Flinders, Liddle and Behan.

We completely lost the midfield battle, as I said in my match report. Fredrikesen looks more like a winger to me. Sweeney was anonymous. But it dosnt mean he deserves a kicking.

Sweeney is at his most effective playing alongside a proper holding midfielder who can break up play and pick out a pass, like Tinkler used to do, allowing Sweeney to get forward and pick up the lay offs that Boyd, Brown and Behan are capable of producing.
The reason our midfield was over run on Sat was because our midfield consisted of three wingers and Sweeney, a surefire recipe for disaster.
We have a couple of options. Get a midfielder of the type I described from our current squad ( hopefully ) or go out and beg steal or borrow one.
Eventually I think Jones might be the answer.
Whoever gets the job has to be made aware that Boyd, Behan and Brown are at their best when balls are played to their feet.

Then we might see Mr Sweeney at his best.
