37 injured apparently.

Major incident at chemical plant
Thirty-seven people have been injured in a toxic leak at a chemical factory on Teesside. All the casualties suffered burns, skin irritation and breathing difficulties in the incident at the BASF site in Billingham on Thursday morning.

According to the North East Ambulance Service, 17 people have been taken to hospital, one with serious burns. The remaining 20 casualties were discharged after being decontaminated at the scene. Nine people have been taken to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, and seven to North Tees Hospital.

The man suffering from serious burns is being treated at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. Ambulance and fire crews from across the region responded to the incident, which happened at around 0930 GMT.

The chemical involved is thought to be hexamethylene diamine, used in the production of acrylic and nylon fibres and plastics.

I did Works Experience at BASF a while ago (like 18 years ago, ooops!), looks like I had a narrow escape..... they even had their own on-site fire engine from what I recall.

I worked on the Biofuels plant just over the road from BASF and next door to Degussa.

Such a nice picturesque place isn't it?
